Out of interest I googled exotic pets/licences and found this article. It's interesting to see what you don't need a licence to keep but have a look at the "those that did before and still do" section . . . . . it says "horses" . . . . . . . . . . .
I believe that you need to be approved by your local councel's Environmental Health dept. to keep a monkey. And are inspected every year to ensure that the animal is being kept appropriately.
They have the right to remove it if they are at all concerned. This has been done and at least two of the Cappuchin's that I know of are now residents of Monkey World in Dorset.
It's diabolical, they live for 40 years and are very social animals and here you have them stripped from their parents at birth raised as a human, then kept in a cage alone for the rest of their lives, fed dubius diets and ignored when they startrebelling, this sort of life is bad enough for a budgy let alone an intelligent primate, so so sad.
To help clear things up that is a very well known scam in the exotics community and the animals are not for sale.
I keep a number of exotic mammals you do not need an "exotic animal license" - there is no such thing. You are probably thinking of the Dangerous Wild Animals act which states you need a DWA license for certain exotic mammals, reptiles, birds etc.
Many small monkeys are no longer covered by the act. Pet shops are also exempt from the licensing system in most cases as they are covered under their pet shop license.
Most sellers have very stringent vetting procedures for rehousing primates and they are prohibitively expensive animals. It is however perfectly legal to keep them despite the publics misconception that it is not.
I am pestered constantly when I take my exotics out (i don't keep primates) with people claiming it cant possibly be legal to keep them. I just laugh nowadays!
