Hi I am not sure whether my young dark bay horse has mud fever. He has never suffered before but has lost alot of hair from his hoof upto his knees. some parts open. I have another horse with white feet that gets sore underneath and sometimes swells but the bay has no swelling, any answers.

Certainly sounds like it. Have you been washing the legs off - if you have, stop immediately.

I use udder salve for the heals - and any areas that develop scabs that might have escaped me. But I also put baby oil on the legs every other day.

Oh it's wonderful stuff. Was a real discovery for me last year!

You can buy udder cream from any farmers mart. Sudo Cream also works just as well

Agree with Amymay, never hose off, let mud dry and brush it off. Pick all scabs and treat as the bacteria lies beneath the scabs. Udder Cream and Sudo Cream act as a barrier and will protect to a certain degree.
