My pony of 8 years has never ever had any mud fever, and this has been at three different yards. On thursday I moved him to a new yard, and on Sunday I noticed what looked like some mud on his legs, I tried brushing them off and they did't want to come off so still thinking it was mud I pulled them off, the area underneath were a little damp and oozy but I couldn't see a whole lot. There was one on his front right leg, on his heels, originally thought it was an overreach! Nothing on his left front leg, back right leg has two on his fetlocks, and back left leg has one quite high up the front of his cannon. Now I can't figure out if it is mud fever or if they are scabs he somehow got over a few days. He is turned out alone and the field has NO mud at all! He wore travelling boots in transit so I don't think he would have cut himself then, is it possible to get mud fever after 8 years of not having it, with no mud, in april?

how unlucky am I, I was always so glad mud fever was one thing we hadn't had to go through

Thats funny, my mare suddenly has a similar scurfy leg problem where the hair is coming out in clumbs leaving almost bald patches, lots of scurf and it looked like mud fever but without the ooziness. I washed them in light solution of hibiscrub but have put it down to coat change rather than mud fever and am resisiting the urge to keep rubbing at the hair to see if it is still coming out. Her field is very dry and her legs have been dry so similar circumstances to yours.

I did give his legs a bath two days before we moved but used a shampoo I've always used and washed his legs pretty thoroughly, I wonder if it could be that? Will try hibiscrubing them!

Sounds like a something that my horse had last summer, he had quite a few scabs around his heels and also on the front of his legs. it can be caused by a mite in the grass. is the grass fairly long in his new field? I find that Hilton Herbs Top Coat works really well for this, it stops any nasty biting things and keeps the flies away too!
