I found this pic when searching for information about pulled tails... I just wondered is this normal showing practice? Just in the usa? I know nothing about saddlebreds so ignore me if I'm being niave but that looks painful

No comment (words fail me) other than that I'd hate to be the one who had to wash his tail

Poor Beggar, presumably he isn't turned out when there are flies about.

Until the Breed Officials and Judges come to their senses and drop horses like this to the bottom of the line it will always happen.

Why don't Peta tidy their own backyard first?

There was a scandal a few years back in the arabian world (US) when someone had surgery (I believe) done on a stallion to enhance his appearance.

I think the American pacing breeds are put through a lot that we wouldn't tolerate here in the UK. Tail setting, riding with weights on their legs, blistering to make their legs sore so the pick them up higher, growing artificially long hooves, 'platform' shoes etc.

Yet I bet their owners claim they love them.

There are quite a lot of things that happen in the USA that would be frowned upon here, but unfortunately some people bring USA breeds to this country and think that they have to maintain some of the practices - like the platform shoes. I honestly believe that there is no "soring" of horses in the UK.

On the other hand, although some of the riding is very different it is just another sort of horsemanship and another skill to master.
Saddleseat and western riding are both different, but interesting.

All the saddlebreds I've seen in this country have had full tails, but in the states they are very much 'toy' horses and get treated like poodles. I also don't like the way they train the 5 gaits in the saddlebred..
