Is this totally the wrong time of year??

It looks like my pony is going to be coming back from his loan home as he has been totally outgrown and his young rider is now out of junior classes. I have decided that I am going to sell him rather than loan him out again but are ponies selling at the moment, or does it all stop for Christmas?

Shall I advertise him now and hope that I get people who are looking for a pony during the school holidays or do I upset my bank manager and keep him in livery until Jan/Feb and try and sell him then? Ideally I'd like to keep him until spring but funds won't allow that.

I would have thought a good jumping pony would be especially welcome at this time of year for all the indoor showjumping clases, particularly if it is a BSJA pony.

However that said, most people like to buy horses in the spring for the simple fact that they have got winter out of the way and they can concentrate on spending time with the new purchase with the longer lighter nights and warmer weather.

Well I have my daughter's BSJA pony up for sale and have not had hardly any response. In fact I have only had 3 phone calls and 2 viewings. One found him too strong and the others are having a 2nd viewing tomorrow (wish us luck with that).

My instructor advised me that if he didn't sell now then I should wait until February as no-one buys in January.

You might be lucky to catch the school holiday people but often people are busy with family things then.

You could try the free online ad pages now and see how you go and then pay for advertising next year if you still have him.

Not much is selling, my friend who does this for a business is having real trouble selling some top class ponies and youngstock.

Only way you can know is to try the market - I personally would wait until after Christmas to avoid the pony being bought as a christmas pressie by someone who might not have a clue.

I know personally I wouldn't look to buy at this time of year. With the evenings being so dark and the weather being so foul it would be hard for children to form much of a bond with their new mount during the mid-winter months. Doesn't mean no-one will buy him, but just you will have less interest (and perhaps have to accept a lower price) than if you were able to wait until February half term.

Might be worth advertising him for loan at current yard/LWVTB at the same time so if he doesn't sell at least you get some of the livery costs covered? Obviously it would be best if you were totally open about wanting to sell. But it might tempt some of those un-sure parents...
