ooooooooo goodness I'm quiet shocked, how long before it leaves a horses system? I haven't affliated my horses with BD but the old boy had a chest infection during the summer he was on ventapulmin for a tubs worth about 3 weeks but after a fortnight he was fine to be ridden and did an unaffliated test it never occured to me the drugs he was on would be banned if we were doing an affliated test. I also know a horse with mild COPD thats worked as normal but permanetly on ventapulmin had no idea she wouldn't be able to compete BD

My vet could've just mean't FEI, (Although I'm sure he said BE too as we discussed the risks of being tested at the lower levels, hyothetically of course!) as I was still aiming for a CCI*, so it was dismissed quite quickly!

Best bet is to email them and ask.

They don't publish a list but instead there's abit saying any drugs/suppliments that enhance any of the horses main systems (circulatory, repsiritory etc etc ) are not allowed.

I emaile them once to ask about something and they replied pretty quickly.

Saf was tested at BCA last year doing Novice, so hits us at the lower levels too.
She has own feed buckets etc as dont want the risk of cross contamination with something else on the yard. We were clear and even though I knew she would be the two week wait was horrid.

My horse had this (as well as an inhaler) a few months ago for treatment for emphysema and asthma. I never even thought about it being a banned substance and am quite surprised it is!!

BD, BE and BSJA all follow the FEI doping rules exactly. So, if a substance is on the FEI banned list, it is also banned for UK competition.

Rather than get two lists out of synch, affiliated competitors are directed straight to the FEI -

Bear in mind you need to know the specific type of substance in use in the medication as trade names are virtually never used - certainly you won't find Ventipulmin listed, but you will find

• central and respiratory stimulants;
• clenbuterol and other bronchodilators and products used for the treatment of
recurrent airway disease (RAD);

we had this question with my horse recently who is with a professional and competes BD and BE - he had a slight cough and the vet recommended Ventapulmin. The rider checked with a team vet, and was told that she would be OK to compete if it was used in the nebulised form rather than fed, if she could get hold of a nebuliser - which she did. He was taken off it well before competing - so if you did do that you would need to check how long before competing they needed to stop anyway.

Tori I know BSJA don't follow FEI rules for non national competitions as you can infact use Bute under the rules for the non national competitions. It's been discussed several times on here. Well unless it's changed in the last 6 months.

I'm not sure what you mean by "non national" competitions, but Yes, quite right, Bute and it's derivatives are specifically excluded from the prohibited list under table 97.1 of the BSJA rules, but that's the only one. In all other respects they follow the FEI.

Ventipulmin is a banned substance BE and BSJA - yes it aids respiratory problems but could be used wrongly to open the airways up i suppose! Either way its banned by them - not sure about BD but i would assume its the same?

It's real name is Clenbutarol, which is also used in some cases for Human breathing issues. However it is also a popular but highly illegal drug especially among the bodybuilding set as it has midly anarobic properties (retains muscle) and speeds up the metabolisum by about 10% which increases weight loss mainly fatloss. It also speeds up heart rate, body temp etc, and therefore phyical exersion is that much easier. Many cyclists have been banned for using it. And here is the USA many of the local tabloids claim it is the dieting drug of choice for young hollywood.

Just incase anyone was interested

Ventipulmin is a funny drug.
If you havent been using it for very long it is unlikely to show up on a test, but if youve been using it for ages the withdrawal period is a lot longer than stated.
It keeps building up in the system.
I know this as one of the top NH trainers ran a horse that was on it by mistake, it won and the dope test come back clear. Since them him and his vet have worked out just how long you can use it for before it starts to show.
