he's always been good, when he was quite newly backed i was hacking, and passed a woman and girl on ponies complaining to a policeman about a open air rock festival in some grounds next to the path and told me not to go that way unless he was bombproof, i just let him watch the action and he was fine, just interested
My boy is an abolute saint to hack, in all traffic.
Beware of mini shetland ponies though as they are very scary and you must try and turn round and run as fast as you can, lol
Oh and they will be both bet a little worried about walking past a skate park but generally thats just a bit of headshaking and trotting off - mainly because its not something they see very often and its very noisy!!
Well I ticked yes, and then went though the list and realised how bad he actually can be!
Beau hadnt even been hacked really until we got him in Feb, so I dont expect him to be bombproof, saying that he has never spooked on the roads, but we have only seen a few cars and the odd van.
Lance on the other hand, if we are in company he is very good, he does spook a little if its a big lorry or a motorbike, but its more jogging a few steps. If he is alone everything is more scary, he is fine with cars but if something big is coming he can sometimes just stop and freeze for a few seconds, and he spooks at monsters in hedges etc, he is just a big wuss really, at 18 ! He just thinks its fun.
Nothing really fazes Beau. We have tractors coming into the yard and my Oh drives a big van, he is pretty chilled though.
PF, having come from Newmarket, is entirely happy in traffic... she's less happy with plastic bags, wheelie bins and her shadow... which can get rather annoying!
Yes to all of them with Fudge, although he's a little hestitant to go past tractors and pushchairs with rain covers.
Yes to all of them with Lady although she gets a little jumpy with the louder motorbikes and also some air brakes.
I would say both mine are good in traffic because they will go past everything and just need a little positive reinforcement with the items they are not keen on.
I consider my lad to be ok in traffic, not perfect, but not horribly dangerous either.
He's ok with most cars (unless they have a roof rack, squeaky brakes or make other unusual noises), is ok with bikes (unless they sneak up on him), fine with pedestrians (unless people are in odd places, he can't deal with people hiding behind trees, in bushes, up ladders, in ditches, etc), and he is normally fine with motorbikes. Vans are ok if they are ordinary vans going at a reasonable speed. If they have any extras fitted, they are scarey.
Lorries, tractors, and form of trailers and buses are all a big no-go. If we bump into any then I have to dismount and lead him past, or find somewhere for him to hide (like a reasonably deep driveway or gateway).
He's a happy hacker BTW. Saying that, he's not the kind of horse who will throw a total fit at scarey stuff. The worst he does is drop his shoulder, spin and tank a few strides back down the road, he will then stop. He will not go within around 20ft of one of them without a LOT of persuasion and the vehicle being stationery.
My horse was only backed at the end of Feb but I would say that yes he is good in traffic. We have met all of above apart from buses as we just dont get them around the lanes. Im quite happy taking him out on his own already. I think it really helped that I took him out in hand (with a pocket full of treats) before taking him out hacking.
