Is your horse insured?

No, I've got too many. I am BHS gold for 3rd party (should be a legal requirement). I am having a current nightmare and am facing a £5K bill for my mare (posted with pics 3 weeks ago). However if you add it all up over 5 years of not insuring 7 horses then I'm probably still quids in I reckon (but tbh have no idea how much insurance is)

Not at the moment. He probably will be soon though, as his workload is increasing as is the level he's competing at. This year he's been doing PC intermediate eventing (1m) and has affiliated to BE quite recently. Hopefully he'll be looking at doing a bit more next year and will be worth the insurance.

My old horse wasn't either. He was very old, and in a case where the vets bills would be vast enough for us to need the insurance we'd probably PTS, which is what happened in the end.

Nope just bhs for 3rd party. I cope with vet bills as they come and know so many people who have been ripped off by insurance companies I won't entertain them.

Oh I meant to say that re not insuring - it would have been a factor in my decision whether to PTS or not. Vet only giving a 50/50 so had she not been 5 months in foal I think I would have PTS. This can become an issue - when I was quoted £2K for a back op for my Lhasa then it was a nightmare and I felt really bad that finances were part of the decision process. In the end the vets refused to operate (old and fat) which got me out of the guilt issue. I think if I had one special friend I would insure. I also always make sure I have '£6 grand for a colic' but didn't see this coming.

I'm insured and glad I am, I would have been bankrupt by now. A word of warning if you don't have public liabilty insurance. I friend of
Mines horse kicked another livery in the field and is being taken to court.

I think the case will be thrown out as by puting her horse in a field with others she took the risk on herself, act of god.
I am hoping to put my boy on loan and as he will be outwith my direct control I will pay the vet insurance £30 per month [cover for £5K bills'. £1500 value]
I am insured with BHS for PL, just in case. £59.00

Mine is insured with a veteren policy. Vet bills are only covered for 'visible' accidents and costs to euthanise, but, it does cover almost any activity.
The only thing that almost swayed me to going back to full vet cover was colic surgery, I couldn't afford it, nor raise the money. However, I was recently told, by a vet, that, owing to our location, surgery is rarely an option because of the time it takes to travel to 'horsepital' and it's not practical to do it 'onsite' in most cases.
I also have 3rd party through BHS

We have public liability through PC but we don't have the pony insured. Simply because I can't afford the premiums. He hasn't needed a vet in the 3yrs we've owned him (other than jabs) & touch wood it stays that way until he goes up for sale in the spring. If anything does happen, ill just have to get the credit card out :(

My horse is insured for 5k vets bills plus all the usual jazz and public liability. Daughters pony isn't, he is 23 and all the veteran policies I looked at cover hardly anything. She has PL insurace through Pony Club.

One of mine is with NFU (costs me a fortune every month and I'm yet to claim!). My two veteran ponies aren't and never have been, they're both over 20 so I doubt they'd get insured anyway by now. Plus they both have various issues so even without their age, nobody would insure them!

Yes I insure, but only because of vets fees. I try and keep down the premium by under valuing the horse I just set at £1000-£1500, don't have loss of use ether. But I do make sure I'm covered for the riding activity and myself (rider).

I do this because otherwise the monthly payment would be £50+ which is a lot of money, but how I do it I pay £22. None of horses are world beaters and don't cost the earth, if the worst happens and I don't have loss of use I'd just have to save for a replacement, not a problem for me. It's the vets fees I'm more worried about, as I havnt the funds to pay £5000 straight out. My vets fees is always set on the highest level possible.

Yes, both of mine are insured and because I have been with NFU for 4 years nearly, although my lad is now a veteran he is still fully insured, I think that'll change next year though. However it is expensive, nearly £100 a month, but I worry if I stop will I put the money away?

I'm currently with pet plan but only got a youngster ATM so min riding activity. And when he starts being backed I'll bump it up.

Am trust is a similar price but got a free horse wear jacket with pet plan:D

I've been with the NFU for 12 years and only claimed once. I can't believe how much it's gone up

Insurance is a major racket, sooo many exclusions. Don't insure any of mine; DO pay vets bills, which are few and far between, thank gods.

Yes, all three of my family's horses have been. Death, theft and straying, third party, and vet's fees. The first two took FAR more from the insurance companies than we ever paid. And I'm glad that a month ago, when my beloved mare had colic, we were able to give her a chance of survival with surgery even though it didn't work out. Without insurance she wouldn't have had any chance as it would have been out of the question.

all mine are insured - wouldnt take the chance tbh!

Fully covered for everything except LOU (too young) with PP wouldnt take any chances. xx
