Is your horse kept like this?

I hope this strict routine keeps the laminitis away. Out for half an hour am then out for three hours in the afternoon, stabled the rest of the time, seems content. If this sounds familiar, let me know!

Personally I prefer to keep lami's outside if possible (obviously not during an actual attack though when they may need a supportive shavings bed etc.). I feel its best for them to keep moving about to keep their circulation going which is always beneficial for their hooves and also as quite a few ponies are overweight who have lami, again being out will help them lose calories!

Of course it needs to be on a pretty bald piece of land though! I have 2 ponies who have had lami in the past, both are kept on a small paddock which has a very very slight covering of grass (well, not so much grass but weed and bald patches!) all summer. They get as much hay as they want which tends to keep them occupied and makes them less-frantically graze!

Yes mine has recently recovered. Hope he can go out a bit more in the winter. Seems content though. Its SO unfair, in the other paddocks are horses, ponies out 24/7 with lots of grass chomping away. This torrential rain wont help, will continue to be strict. Had a gap of 3 years with no lami.........the got it again.

Best time to turn out is at night. Worst time for a lami is when the sun is at its highest during the day which is when the frunctans in the grass are at their sweetest (3pm ish in summer).

would be better if the 3hr could be am and the 40 mins pm if your routine allows this. Due to the fructan build up, it gets higher in the grass during the day then drops overnight so is lowest first thing.

I have my oldie on a similar regime, for 2 hours and 1 hour, he also gets turned in the school in the day if it is empty.

He has to go on good grass as his teeth are too poor to graze very short grass.

Be careful with very short grass as stressed grass contains more fructan.

I agree with MagicMelon. Laminitics need to keep moving to keep the circulation working well in the hooves.(not during an attack obviously!) Obviously, what routine each indiviual uses depends on their circumstances, so, if the routine is working for you, then don't change it.

Thanks for replies. read the advice so he is now out 3 hours am, muzzle on and half an hour in the late pm when I am doing the stable. Thought I had it right for three years, then got it again.
