Hi all,
My irish draught has just started hunting :D and has only been once! He really enjoyed it and he is going to be doing the entire season. But at the moment he is being a real handful and at 18hh he really needs to calm down! Just wondering if he will calm down and settle into his role? He is a fantastic horse and born to hunt, just needs a firm hand! Also with regards to feeding him any suggestions? and should he be fed when he gets home provided he has an hours rest before?

my horse was exacley the same and iam so glad i percevered with taking her i cauld of just given up cause she wouldnt stand still at all she just wanted to kick every thing but now shes the moast amazing horse and fantastick hunter ,and regards to feeding after a lon days hunting i love tucking her up in her stable with her normal feed but i reed my horses barley dure in the winter as she looses condition dure in the hunting season.

Ron is 16 and hunts twice a week and I would say that the start of the season is the worst... once they get the novelty out of their system they're much better. I hunt in a double bridle until after christmas, and then in a snaffle!

ETA - don't get cross with him (especially with ID types it makes them worse! ;)) try being positive and giving him something to do (even walking 10m circles!), push him on when you can so that he doesn't always feel like he's being held up by you!

try reading my blog about getting ready and feeding for hunting

thanks FM - it's taking me a little longer than I had planned to get all the stuff up there, because each time I go to edit my files the research has shown something else which I want to add in!

keep watching it, you might find a few useful things going up (eventually!)
