Hiya,

My VW Golf is on its last legs and i've been thinking of buying an Isuzu Trooper. Reason for this is i can hopefully drive more confidently in the snow (as this seems to be a inevitable in winter now!) and also in the future i would like to take my trailer test to be able to take my 14.2hh and 15.2hh horses out.

Wondered if you guys could answer a few questions from experience please?

1. Can it easily tow a trailer with my 2 horses.
2. Which model would you recommend.
3. Whats the fuel consumption like. I do approximately 120miles per week. Will i have a shock from driving my Golf TDI?
4. Any other experiences you've had with them good or bad.

Thanks in advance

They are great cars - just don't get the 3.0l version as they have some kind of problem - others will know which one exactly:)

I have the 3.1 version and it will easily tow two big hunters up a vertical cliff:eek::D as for fuel consumption be prepared to be shocked as they only do about 25 miles to the gallon - so at current prices that's about 7 quid:eek:

But having said all that mine is 15 years old and apart from general wear and tear nothing major wrong with it and years left in him:D

As with anything get some you trust and who knows about cars to give it the once over - Troopers are built to last:)

^^^^^^ This, love mine, they don't rust like landies, will tow I think the max is 3.3 tonnes, so easily what you need and more!!!! And I doubt you'll find anyone with the 3.1 engine fault it.....

3.5 tonne towing weight which is as good as you get but to put it into perspective for you, ours costs about £100 for 400 motorway miles (less towing or on little lanes), the Audi A3 tdi costs £70 for 600 miles!

I'm another one with an elderly 3.1 but we only use it for towing and snow days because of the heavy diesel consumption. I love it, we've had it 8 years and had another Isuzu before that.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I would be using it to commute to and from work and the stables and its all country roads/B roads so have a feeling its going to cost me the earth in fuel : (

Anyone know of any other 4x4's that can tow a trailer with my 2 and is better in fuel consumption? Please?

i have the 3.1 vauxhall monterey, which is a rebadged isuzu. as been said fab for towing 3.5 tons but i only use for towing and horsey jobs as you can see the needle moving . absolutely love it though.

Well Ive owned Suzi Trooper now for 6 yrs, 7 this year. Super car, mines the 3.1 turbo diesel (N reg) and shes great. Tows easy and wouldnt say that the diesel consumption is particuarly bad, I use it every day for work and my rug washing business. Its the SWB version, love it and wouldnt swap her. Will be sad when shes no longer around!!

I would say anything that can tow 2 horses plus trailer and gear responsibly will be costly on fuel compared to what you've been paying!! If you can afford a newer car the kia sorento or similar maybe better as newer cars are built with fuel consumption more in mind than they used to!!!!

sorry to be a bringer of bad news but.... ducks for cover!!!! anything that will safely tow 2 horses will do around 25/30 mpg... best if you can stick with your diesel car
and buy a cheap lorry or 4x4 for the horse job...

I would never touch one again!

I had a W reg (2000) swb 3.1td - had it three weeks and the engine blew up on a dual carriage way towing the gee gee! (piston cam out the top of the engine)! £3500+vat later for a new engine, found out it was a common fault and that's why Isuzu company went under (was rescued in a buy out before total collapse).

Thousands of Isuzu's were recalled for an engine fault - mine was not followed up by the previous owner.....

18/22 mpg's when towing iw510 and a welsh cob!

suffice to say, wouldn't buy another! I didn't keep it as I didn't trust it!

P.s I have a Mitsubishi Padjero that is fab and tow's like a dream. Averages about 25/28mpg when towing iw 510 and 3 big gee gees.

This problem was with the 3.0ltr models and was an injector problem, look around hard and find a 3.1 a much better engine. I have one and it's lovely, much more refined and car like than my old fourtrack - and that was an awesome towing vehicle and a little better on fuel too, worth a look -

That was the problem with the newer ones. I am also lucky in that hubby is an RAC man and looks after Suzi very well. She will stay with me til her dying day!!

I'm guessing then that you bought (as it was a w reg and due to the problems!) the 3.0 litre NOT the 3.1 which is a very trustworthy engine!!! There were alot of issues with the 3.0 version and most were recalled I believe.

LOL just seen the posts above, wow that's the first bad report of a 3.1 I've ever seen, yes you must have gotten a friday afternoon car!! I thought the 3.1 engine wasn't made later than S reg though?????

I was also thinking about the Fourtrak.

Any other 4x4's that are slightly less thirsty? I'm not looking for something the same fuel consumption as what i'm used to with my golf because i know thats not possible just dont want it to cost me £20 to do 30miles like my boyfriends subaru wrx is costing me at the moment!

Correct - checked with OH and it was the 3.0 version that was a very poorly engine.

I also had a 3.1 that blew not 1 but 3 head gaskets in a year,it was an m reg but it was an import which I have since found out were the worst around that age .I had a 2.8 before that and it was brilliant ,got a mitsubishi pick up that also had the head gasket go now I have a Nissan Navara that has been very reliable for 2 yrs and does about 25-30 mpg when towing ,also the tax is only £200 a year as it is classed as commercial.
