I have a chest freezer that is broken and dead.

I was wondering if I could take it to the yard and use it as a feed bin?

But I vaguely remember hearing that there is a radiation issue?

Or am I mad?

It's a brilliant recycling idea. I have one that has served me well for years as a feed bin - totally rat proof.

I bought it for £10 off a local fridge/freezer place and they remove all the nasty stuff and recycle it/pay for it to be recycled.

They make a perfect rat proof storage bin - you can get 'de gased' ones from the tip - maybe google how to 'de gas'? Agree with above tho. it's ozone layer damage that comes from old ones.

We keep most of our rugs in old freezers as used to sell meat so have a few, air tight so don't get damp and keeps the mice out too - hadn't thought of using them for feed bins - great idea.

Fridges and freezers are hazardous waste and it is not legal to de gas them yourself - it must be done in a facility licenced by the Environment Agency.

Good idea, you can put a padlock on too so you can get loads of stuff in there! Probably wouldn't keep an expensive saddle in there but maybe bridles and other things :-)

I use freezers for feed bins....to store all buckets in....for an extra large extra tack/brushes/whips/ect-tack box (you can nail into some freezers if you drill a hole first)....we used one to start our spring plants in too..I store jump cups/filler flowers in them.

We use alot of freezers because of the beef operation so the old ones become used whatevers:)

Sorry for going off on a tangent but got to share this !
A woman that I work with is lovely but a bit dim. She had a new fridge delivered and the guy said just leave it for a few hours so the gas settles. She looked horrified and said 'but I didn't order a gas fridge, I wanted electric' :)
