To ride out 4 a breast on country roads (or any roads for that matter) without any kind of hi viz clothing on, on a dull yorkshire day.
Just driven past exactly this, and just feel slightly disheartened as it will always be the small few that ruin it for everyone who is responsible.
Whilst I understand that young horses and young children may need a buffer between the traffic in the form of a sensible horse and rider, you cannot reasonably expect drivers to pass four middle aged ladies, on pretty dope-on-a-rope looking horses, deep in conversation and oblivious to the outside world, with any kind of consideration.
It really is a question of common sense, and sometimes I just think the equine world would have a slightly better rep if you had to pass exams to own and ride horses.

AHHHHH some horse riders realy P*** me off sometimes. They wonder why drivers hate all riders. I do ride two abreast down the road but that is because i lead a small child on her pony. But we always get out of the way of the traffic as soon as we can. By standing on a verge or going into a driveway.
These ladys had no excuse to ride like that.

Drove past a chap the other day, dark horse, no hi-vis. Fast wide-ish lane and he didn't have a hat on!!! Well, he had a baseball cap. Silly little man.

I didn't as I was just going to the doctors but I know which yard they are from and I will go down later on because I'm quite annoyed about it.

Fairplay

There is posters and stuff you can get from the BHS. No idea if you have to be an approved yard/member.

Fair enough - however I seem to remember you saying you hack out in a patey and no hi viz and that is your choice.... and therefore dont see your point?

I was on my way to the yard a couple of weeks ago. We were behind 3 horses, approcahing a blind bend. One of the riders had no hat on and was in the middle of the road and going over the other side of the road and just basically being a prat. A car coming towards us wouldn't have had a chance. It made me so angry and I did have a go at them, but they thought it was all a big joke.

Hope you do better than me. A few weeks ago I passed a man riding down a twisty A road with no hi viz just when the sun was in driver's eyes. I pulled over and explained that I hadn't been able to see him until the last minute and that hi-viz might be a good idea. I'm not usually so bold but I was really worried about his safety.

Yesterday my OH and I passed him again on the same stretch of road this time riding behind a child on a pony and still not a scrap of hi-viz between them. Might as well have saved my breath.

I don't hack out on any public roads/bridleways so am not a hazard to any member of the public.

Sorry, my bad, only you posted on a thread about wearing hi viz and didnt make yourself clear you never actually went on the road.

Even if she was riding on the roads without wearing Hi viz, I doubt that she would do it while she rode 4 horses abreast, possibly also talking to herself, and I would believe it is a slightly bigger risk of being hit by a car, if you take up a whole lane, than if you ride your horse out on the edge of the road.

Besides, it is also neither rude or impolite to ride horses in a single file on the road and if a driver is annoyed over needing to share the road with horses, being ridden in a single file, it is not the riders fault, but if a driver is annoyed by 4 horses being ridden abreast, I think it is the riders fault.

How about three trotters hammering down a road at 38mph - yea - three abreast.
Actually, they were only walking when three abreast, but you get me!
Hi viz, you gotta be kiddin!!:(:(

My dad was driving to my old yard once and passed 2 of the girls without Hi Viz, in dark clothes on dark horses. He went straight up to them and told them politely that he couldn't see them. He then collected several Hi viz vests of various sizes from his workplace and took them to the yard and gave them out to everyone, thinking he was being kind, bless him.
Did they wear them??? Did they s***e!!!!!

Then they had the cheek to laugh at my horse in his new orange hiviz exercise rug.... grr

Grr it annoys me when people take the mick out of you for wearing hi viz, they say i look radioactive :/ but oh well my horses safety is far more important to me.

I saw a black horse with a rider in black clothes riding under the shade of trees when i was having a driving lesson the other day, even the instructor didnt see her straight away
