Itching horse - help

I am at a total loss on what to do, can anyone shed some help?
My boy was on box rest last winter, with restricted turnout and exercise. He went through a really itchy faze. Rubbed him self raw. We treated him with mites stuff quite a few times + clipped him - every time would eaze so assumed was mites, but then he would itch again - i moved him into a stable i had disinfected and through away loads of rugs, got him all new brushes etc and we treated every horse he had come into contact with - although he was the only one itching. It come back again and we could not find any mites on him. So we totally changed his diet incase it was that & replaced haylege with hay and it eased up, so assumed it was that - He was turned out at the end of march. He has now returned to the yard and his old stable. He is itching himself raw - he has only been back 2 weeks. His face and bum are swollen and bleeding. he is so sore to touch. Again have treated him with Mite lotion. His stable was disenfected when he left and other horses have used it since without a issue. He has a big coat, so is unrugged and is on the feed he has been on the whole time he has been out the only addition to his diet is hay. I wondered if could be stress from being in - he is out 7 - 7 and as retired show horse he was used to travelling to different venues and lack of turnout so when it first happend never considered being stabled could be the cause, someone else has also said conjuctivitus. I have called the vet and he will be coming out to him. But wondered if anyone else had come accross similar issues.

If the change of diet helped it may well be something that acts as a trigger, I have used a detox to treat itchy horses and it has worked well. NAF do one and I have used it, also global herbs.

What are you feeding him as it may be worth cutting it out completely then if he stops itching introducing it back one part at a time.

Another one to recommend Naf Detox. I used it after months of a rash that just wouldn't clear up. Had treatments from vet and tried all sorts of lotions and potions. Rash went and never recurred. Different symptoms from your boy but well worth a try.

My boy is on box rest as we speak and he is getting a bit itchy so I will be getting him a detox.

Also you can mix 4 tablespoons of pure Neem oil, 2 tablespoons shampoo with 1 litre of hot water and wash him with this. Do not rinse off.

This will stop any mites and will also ease any irritation.

I had a similar thing with my mare in that she moved around stables a couple of times on one yard, being in the same one twice. Both times she was in that box she got mites but was itchy all over, not just her legs. Only had bother outside of that box once. We treated with dectomax shots which made a big difference very quickly. It's a single intramuscular injection that kills all internal and external parasite, which you can get from your vet.

The mites do seem to resist disinfecting of a stable as we must have done that box 4 or 5 times and she still got mites everytime she went in there. Other horses didn't seem to have any bother but some horses seem extra prone to them.

In your case I would be inclined to try a different stable and a dectomax shot combined with disinfect all rugs/brushes etc and give the horse a bath with mesalosab type shampoo that kills all bacterial/fungal type things and soothes the skin to cover all bases and prevent any secondary infections where he's rubbed raw.

I have a shampoo that is Neem oil based...but it is at the yard and I can not remember its name!!
My girl is very itchy..or she was. I have removed all sugars from her diet and don't even think of a rug until she is clipped as she is more comfortable like that, even slightly too warm will trigger her itching. In the Summer I bath her regularly with the neem shampoo, now the winter is on its way I will hot cloth her weekly (once clipped) and wash off sweat straight away once worked.
I tried the dectomax, and all the sweat itch lotions and nothing worked for her so six months after I first got her, and discovered her itch problem, I made these changes and so far she is much happier.

I honestly believe that most of these problems need tackling from inside out.....except mites etc of course.

You might like to read my posting about the horse with eczema, and also try the latest homeopathic product which I am using, which is having an effect [having tried all the others people have suggested]

Look up "Skookum Chuck" which is a red indian word [the meaning of which I found fascinating] and maybe it could help your horse to. Not expensive, and what has one got to lose!
