A year ago i bought 2 highland pony youngsters from scotland, a filly and a colt. The filly had sweetitch, which is now easily controlled with fly rugs and flyspray etc. The colt never ever itched - that is until he was gelded. Now he itches terribly, his mane is nearly all rubbed away as well as all the hair on his face and ears. he also itches his tummy/sheath on the floor. where the ponies lived before in scotland was terrible for midges, and if the colts problem was really sweetitch, why didnt he itch there? there really was no itching whatsoever. why since he has been gelded has it brought on such a reaction? has anyone else experienced anything like this? i have had our vet look at him, he seems to think it is sweetitch - but im more inclined to think it could be linked to something hormonal? the poor boy is in such a sorry state, he has horrendously sensitive skin and it is driving him mad. suggestions please!!!

Sometime stress can trigger these things. Sweet itch does usually start in the 2nd year but obviously not always.
