Pony has been itching his bottom. He has rubbed bare patches either side of his anus and further down his leg has two sore, pink patches. His dock is a light pink (normally dark grey as he is grey himself) and a little scabby. We got the vet out who didn't know what it could be; worming is up to date, no sign of mites etc. He took a skin scrape and gave a cream called Fuciderm to be put on the pink patches. We're waiting to hear results of skin scrape at the moment.

Also, he has recently started spooking when other horses come from behind, for eg. in a warm up ring. He will bring his head up, flinch through his whole body, scoot his hind-legs under him and try and basically gallop off. Do you think there is some connection between his sore bottom and his spookiness?

I'm not quite sure where to go from now.

Thanks for any replies/suggestions. :)

I would suspect oxyuris equi or pin-worm. It is not unusual to have a good de-worming history and still have this parasite, it is not clear whether these parasites are developing resistance to anthelminitics or whether because of their life-cycle they can evade the chemicals, treatment regimes involve a combination of de-worming and hygiene, the details of which should be discussed with your vet. Ask your vet to do a "sellotape" test, to start with.

The vet asked to ring him back today to see how he is getting on so will ask about it then. Do you know how he would have pin worm (is it by mouth?) and is it possible for him to be the only who has it in a field of 6? All out 24/7?

Thanks for your help.
