My welshie is now 3 - he was a rig-colt with only one testicle down. He had his op at the end of feb this year, it was a big op on the table at the surgery, the testicle was located in his abdomen. Before he went he was good weight wise and looked pretty good. However after 2 days of being home he dropped weight. Upped his feed and he has ad-lib hay. He has put some on lately but he still looks a bit moth-eaten and ribby. Of course i have been waiting for the grass to come through hoping he will soon pick up but with its late arrival he is still looking lean!
Also He has always been a bit of an itchy boy but the past 2 weeks or so i have noticed a few baldy patches and he's a bit itchy. These patches are located on his stifle both sides and he has one at the side of his jaw (looks like a head-collar rub) but he never wears a head-collar so def not anything rubbing. His coat is generally dry and he has scaly skin. He had similar last summer on his chest but it disappeared in the autumn. He never rubs his tail or mane.
He has been wormed regular and up to date.
Am thinking i may bath him in a dermological/insecticidal horsey shampoo to see if it helps.
Obviously am keeping an eye on it and if it gets worse/spreads i will call out the vet - i may just call them anyway just to give him the once over as am thinking the 2 could be related??
I have posted a pic so you get the idea :)

I would try a detox, NAF do one that I have used for itchy skin conditions, he may well be a bit low due to the impact of the op and drugs etc, the late spring is certainly not helping.

You could try adding a few drops of Linseed Oil to his feed; my two both have it. Traddie boy has Sweet Itch, and apparently linseed makes their coats more oily so the midges don't like it as much! Plus mare has it too - and she's got a lovely shiney coat.

But don't expect instant results; you should begin to notice an improvement after say a month.

But if you're worried, I'd ask the vet to take a look. Could be a vitamin deficiency?

Spring is soooo late this year, all horses coats are a mess. Has he been rugged? Coat might be coming thru but greasy, good old bath if your weather permits and doctor green and some sunshine will help, don't think it could be due to his castration although he might be feeling a bit flat, with a bit of TLC he will pick back up

Omg I have just come back from the stables to research EXACTLY this! Same place and everything. Well my lad also has it on his chest and where the girth goes but only in his armpits, so to speak. I'm getting the vet anyway, will repost if he has any ideas!

Will give the linseed a go :) thank you

Yes, let me know :)

mites :-/

Will give him a bath with the insecticidal and see how its looking. Its strange how it is only located in 2 parts of him, also he has had it for a few weeks now and is kept with my mare who is showing no signs of similar or mites

Can't really help but just to add to your plan to patch test the shampoo before bathing him in it fully. I have learned the hard way and made my itchy boy quite sore after bathing him in tea tree oil when he was moth eaten last year. I always patch test new products but had used this plenty of times on him before but he was sore and it irritated his skin further. He was fine but I was annoyed at myself for being stupid and him being sore.

Looks like my little Shetland . Just treated him for lice/mites but not seen any thing on him but he's rubbed himself on his head , under neck , chest etc. so far looking like he is less itchy now so fingers crossed.

Just like my loan Welsh A!

She already has micronised linseed which has helped her coat a lot but still itchy, I've wiped her over with coopers to treat lice, she has only just started shedding which hasn't helped and has a few semi bald patches on her face where she seems to have either shed the hair first or has rubbed. They are starting to look a bit dry and scaly underneath.

She also has patches down her chest, at her armpit and in the crease of her back legs (legpits?!) Where she has rubbed but they don't look sore. She has a few patches of flaky dandruffy skin which may previously have been bites but not sore now, I just don't know what to do now, I'm going to see how she goes shedding her coat and give her soothing baths, baby oil on dry areas (might actually try aqueous cream), if it gets worse the vet may need to do a skin sample but I hope it is just seasonal weirdness.
