My horse is very itchy. It is not such a problem that she is rubbing in the field, but when you bring her in and groom her it sets her off and she rubs.

Anyone know what may help - I have been told to try corn oil

Try Global Herb "Skratch". It has a very strong smell that is almost tar like. It will make your horse smell odd too (and when they wee!). Several people on another forum swear by it for thier itchy nags and my daughters cob has stopped rubbing and stamping since he's been on it. I should check first to see if there is a specific cause but when all else fails it's worth a try.

if she starts to really scratch this could be a sign of sweetitch caused by midges if its on body too doesnt just come on mane and tail
cause my friesian mare has the same problem shes been itching really bad as it got to a point she making her self bleed im washing her and putting di itch on her thats all i can do at the moment due to her feeding her 2wk baby

My friend's horse has just been diagnosed with sweetitch, and she has tried shampoos, rugs, standing in at the worst midge time, and none of it is helping.
Maybe she should try "Scratch"...

You could start with some brewers yeast, and if this doesn't do the trick, try Skratch - I have been using the standard version which has stopped Cairo completely from itching and almost stopped Chancer ground humping.

Am now going to try the Skratch Plus on Chancer.

As said, the stuff causes the horse to stink of cat pee and fox but if you spray them as I do with my fly spray which contains a lot of nice essential oils, they aren't that bad - until they sweat.

Still rather have a stinky than itchy horse. I still feed the brewers yeast and also feed linseed which is good for itchy and poor coats.

if it is sweetitch a lady at my yard puts marmite in her horses feed. She has managed to keep the sweetitch at bay...she usually has to hog her horse but it seems to have stopped her having to do it this time.

Have just started my big lad on Skratch Plus. He has lain down and rubbed so bad, he has bald sore patches running the length of his belly, and his face has several weeping sores where he has rubbed it on trees and walls.

My mare got diagnosed with sweet itch over 4 years ago and I have battled til Jan 08 this year to get it under control.

She used to rub her mane and tail raw and even kick at her underneath violenty. I have tried numerous repellants, lotions and supplements all without success

Since Jan 08 I have been using scratch plus and garlic in her feed twice daily, stabling her at night ensuring she is in for dusk / dawn and also she wares a fly rug while she is out - I use the DH Tego Fly rug Its fab and under £35 pound, covers her from head toe with belly strap and fly mask!

In addition to her rug and applying extra when I ride or when she is in her stable without the rug on I use Naf DEET repellant spray and flygon gel for her underneath area and face.

Citronella and other tea tree products I have found do not work.

You can also use hayfever tablets but you will need to seek advice from your vet to the dosage...to give you an idea my mare 14.3hh welsh cob and if she needs them she has to have 16-20 tablets twice a day!!!

My friend and I had this problem with our neddies this spring - we had the vet check them for lice or a skin condition but that wasn't the problem. The vet suggested giving them a good bath with hibiscrub then using cooper's fly repellent. We have also been using NAF D-itch feed supplement and so far they seem much better! Not sure whether it was the bath, the fly repellent or the D-itch but they certainly are better than they were!
