Itchy horse

I have just taken on a mare on loan. She seems very itchy.

I have looked and have not found any lice, but she has a lot of scurf and a very thick coat.
I intend to get her clipped anyway. I have applied louse powder and will give her a bath when It is warm enough.
Any other suggestions please.

My young horse has always been super itchy since a baby, rubbing on everything including haynets, stable bars. I have put him on Dodson and Horrell itch free and also am very careful he doesn't get too hot with rugs, The itch free has seemed to help at the moment.

She may just be feeling a bit too warm. My mare looks like a woolly mammoth and just look at today's temperature - warmer than it was two months ago. Your mare might be like mine and just enjoys the attention of being scratched too. I get pounced on whenever I go in the field and as soon I get scrubbing I realise she is falling asleep. It is a comfort thing for her, like giving a dummy to a baby.

Thanks for replys. I have just had a closer look and I think she has lice. There are lots of small brown long things in her coat. they seem to be dead now, at least the ones I have found are.
I have already treated her with louse powder, will that be strong enough?
I am going to wash rugs and grooming kit etc. I have never had a horse with this before so dont really know how hard hey are to get rid of.
Would human lice shampoo help?

You could try something like (correctly diluted) Deosect to get rid of any nasties/bugs still remaining.

Also feeding a drop of oil in the feed will improve coat condition, as would washing with something like Seleen Dog Shampoo. If there are any dry/scaly/crusty patches sudocrem or aquaous cream will moisturise the area.

I'd also speak to your vet and see what they recommend.
