my horse gets really itchy around his barrell and flanks, even when i am riding him he turns around to scratch himself with his teeth. i'm guessing its due to the midges as there are a few around at the mo. i have bought him a sweet itch rug to see how he goes in that. Anybody else had experience of this, could it be something other than midge related? and what do you use for it, any recommendations greatfully recieved x

Could be a protein resistance. I would wash those areas with hibiscrub - generally sorts out itchiness.

Is he itchy only at this time of year? If it's just for a short time around this time of year, it could be associated with molting out his winter coat (even if he's clipped). I add a heaped tablespoon of Brewers Yeast powder to the feed to help reduce itchiness. It helps.

If his problem is due to sensitivity to midges and he's itching when you ride... I use one of these Cashel Quiet Ride. Obviously you can't compete using one, but I found it a big help when riding my very fly sensitive TB mare.

he was itchy at the end of last summer as well, thats when i bought him - he does get really irritated by the flies, he hates it when they land on him. i've not seen those quiet ride rugs before, they're an option. Will give him a really good wash with hibiscrub, also have some shampoo for lice etc. ( no sign of lice, it's just a general medicated shampoo) Any more possible causes for this greatly recieved. He is a bit lumpy around saddle area also, vets has told me they are warts. so will be keeping a close eye on everything. any body tried any supplements for this kind of thing?
