For the past week my mare has been incredibly itchy. Have checked her for lice and even put lice powder on and have seen no lice or eggs. She's mainly itchy where she isnt clipped (she has a blanket clip) and is turned out at night with a full neck on. I just can't seem to think of anything that could be causing her to be soo itchy. If anyone has any ideas as to why she may be itchy please share. Thanks.

Hmmmm. How long have you had her? Has she ever had sweet itch before? Is her field near standing water or trees? Lowland or upland?

Sorry lots of questions. But I am wondering whether it might be sweet itch, albeit late in the year as there have been lots of midges around in the milder weather just recently and my boy has started rubbing his mane again - I put all my sweet itch rugs away thinking we were out of the sweet itch season and have had to get a rug out again!

Or yes, maybe she is just too hot. Perhaps try a lighter rug - or one without a high nec, and see if she improves?
