My horse is currently at the vets cross tied due to a leg fracture. He's probably got another 4 weeks to go (Has been there for 8)

He is getting very itchy - even more so of late as he has started moulting (We are in SE where is has been really warm this week - 14 degrees yesterday!)

Anyone got any ideas on things we can do to help him. He has a really soft show sheet on and a lw rug. (One comes off in the day if he is too hot). We have bought a massage pad and give him a good groom / scratch all over every day which is also good at getting the hairs out. He is particularly itchy at the 'elbow' (not sure if thats right - I mean the top of his back legs joint) and has a sore on one side where he has pulled at his hair / skin. He is desperate to itch when the rugs comes off - but I dont really like to see him balancing on three legs trying to scratch!!

He is a TB so doesn't really have a winter coat - but is still loosing the bit he does have.

Someone on here talked about 'hot clothing' theit itchy horse - but I'm not sure what that is.
 
Glad to hear you both have come this far :D

I know Clipcloppop clipped her horse because he was itchy.
Jesse was also itchy, but I just groomed him alot everyday. He itched worse on the leg that was broken and all the bandages made him uncomfortable. It was in the summer though.

I took the 3 good leg bandages off everyday to let them have a break and cool down.

There may be a homeopathic remidy for itchiness - try googling it :)

Thank you HKJ. Its great that we have made it to 8 weeks! He only has a really thin coat being a TB so clipping won't really help. He's not overly warm Tinypony - just itchy. :) He needs something on as he is just standing x-tied and although it has been warm this week, its due to get cold again. We tried just leaving a fleece on during the day this week, but he got a bit chilly. I think its the shedding hair and the fact he is x tied and can't roll / itch himself.

I'll google to see if there is anything to help.

His fractured leg is totally bare now - the vets had to take the bandages and splints off 2 weeks ago as the pressure sores on his leg got infected.
 
Aloe vera works amazingly!
If you get it from your supermarket (cheaper than equine stockists) you can put it straight onto his itchiest parts.
Then if I was you I would get some and put it in an old spray pot with some water and spray the solution on him so you can get some of the other itchy spots. Does this make much sense? :p
You can get it really cheap in Tesco :D
 
Yes, the sores aren't a nice thing at all :(

I think I was lucky with Jesse as I took off the bandages and let the legs air. We also changed his broken leg every 3 days - hence me buying out Boots of their large rolls of cotten wool and buying vast amounts of vet wraps off the internet!!

I put Sudocreme on his sores, which is brilliant. It also soothes and cools.

I guess your best bet is to keep on brushing him :)

Saying that, my other horse gets itchy all the time, and he just seems to enjoy scratching!!! Not sweet itch or anything!

To give you a bit more to look forward to..... Jesse is going to start jumping again in the first week of Feb!!! :D
8 months after the kick... how amazing is that - and he is going the best he has ever gone!!!

I had a little sec A mare that was itchy in the summer months, I found 'Marmite' worked wonders with her. I mixed it with water and put it in her feed. It did help that she loved it :)
