My 15hh mare is not a sweet itch case - she never rubs her coat away - but she is always very itchy along her back and hind quarters. Recently after riding she basically asks me to scratch her and she will stand for hours to let me scrub away at her back. She seems to enjoy it so much that she starts trying to groom me back - possibly her trying to repay the favour! She has no real skin problems except the odd little scab or greasy patch, otherwise she has a perfect silky summer coat. I've tried bathing her, using teatree/aloe vera etc. Any other suggestions or remedies for her? Do 'itch' supplements work?

My horse is like this too. He is really thin skinned and is always irritated by the flies - even with a thick fly sheet on. He's far too clever for his own good and actually points with his nose where he wants me to itch... he thinks I'm some type of slave to him!

Some horses are just naturally itchy and like to 'groom' with their owners!

LL chases me with her bum when she wants a scratch! :D And SS demands a face rub after being ridden.. She'll call the RSPCA if I don't ;)
If you can't see any problems & your girl isn't hurting herself rubbing, I wouldn't worry.. She probably enjoys the bonding just as much as the scratching :)

My horse loves being scratched inbetween her back legs. When I am picking out her back feet or trying to tack up she lifts her back leg really high and turns her head right round to show me where to scratch. It is really funny but can be a pain when I'm trying to do other things lol.

Mine do have sweet itch but funnily enough in the summer they both get a itchy spot on their necks and just want me to scratch it !

Baby horse is itchy EVERYWHERE and will also stand all day for a good scritchin' :D

One of the mares at work will indicate with her nose where she would like you to scratch for her in the winter after you take her rug off in the morning.
