itchy horse

My horse randomly started scratching on Tuesday evening, by this morning he had little bites over his quartets and had really rubbed at his tail. I thought it may be mites so bathed him with a mite shampoo. I've just been to check on him and although not as itchy his tail is rubbed very badly. I think the vet will be out in the morning but in the mean time any ideas?

Do you give him Brewer's Yeast? It made one of ours very itchy.

Or have you introduced anything new to the diet?

No changes to diet or management in the five months I've had him
