does any one ahve any helpful advice please?

When you have a close look at the itchy bits, is there broken skin and weeping/crusting? It might be feather mites but with the wet summer, it might be mud fever. If it's feather mites, sadly the little blighters can drop off the horse and live in the bedding etc so you clear it once and then they come back again. My hairy mare had to have the double injection twice a year - expensive and not very effective. So now all her feathers have been clipped out and she is being washed in a weak solution of a proprietary pesticide shampoo. It's the fact that you have to persevere even when you think you've got rid of the little bleeders that can be so demoralising! Others on the Firum have suggested pig oil and sulphur for this but I have no experience of this.

We have four horses on our yard with very full feathers. Our vet suggested washing in Hibiscrub, dry the feathers back then apply Udder cream....strange I know but it seemed to work. Also always have them on clean savings and carefully brush the feathers daily. Good Luck !!
