My ted is now living out 24/7 again, and he's getting mega itchy legs. He's standing rubbing his back legs, even laying down to itch.

I'm going to clip all his legs hair off tomorrow see if that helps. And see what's underneath.

Behind the knee there seems to be this really greasy dandruffy type stuff. And his back leg is cut from rubbing.

I'm wondering what to do or put on it to soothe it.

What can I do to stop him itching? He has nothing in his field to scratch on.

Help!! X x

I don't mean to spread gloom and despondency, but I really would have this checked out by your vet. My cob mare had a condition similar to this last summer. Aided by general advice (non veterinary) I put it down to harvest mites, treated it with sudacrem and baby oil , and it went away, for a bit.

However it returned with a vengeance in the new year, and has been a nightmare. She has been diagnosed with flexural dermatitis - a condition which, as its name suggests, starts where joints flex - i.e. behind the knee and in front of the hock. From ithcy scaly bits it turned into horrible exuding sores, which are taking forever to heal. The lab results have been contradictory, I haven't ridden her in four months, and it is proving so difficult to cure. She lives out 24/7, and the lab reports initially suggested it was a bacteriological issue, in the soil, but neither of the other horses has it, the anti-bacterial drugs did no good at all, and the vet has now reverted to fungal treatments.

So really I would get expert advice now - it may be nothing serious at all, but if it is, you have got in quicker than I did. With best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

He had his teeth done at the end of jan, he did have the greasy bits on the back of his legs then, and the vet did say cobs are prone to a variation if dermatitis.

I think you could be right about the mites though, as the more I'm thinking about it, the more I think that's what it is.

I think I will clip the hair off anyways and see what is underneath all that fetlock.

If it looks really severe I will get vet. :(

Poor boy it must be sore as he was loose in field and I touched the scab and he ran off. :(
