The day I picked up my new Sec D gelding I noticed that he had some raised scabby marks on his near side shoulder. The previous owner told me that they were where her other horses had bitten him and I didn't really think anything else of it.

The day after he got home I noticed that he had a hard-ish lump on the whorl on his windpipe which was itchy. I thought it could have been where he leaned over his stable door at his old yard and decided to keep an eye on it.

Over four weeks later, the marks on his shoulder are still there, these too are itchy and he has more of the lumps like the one on his windpipe. They are all very itchy and all in the neck and shoulder region.

Any ideas what it could be??

strip his diet back to water, hay and grass for the next fortnight! give him a good shampoo and get him clean. try some canestan on his itchy/scabby spots twice a day for a week. dont over rug him keep him on the cool side. then re introduce slowly bucket food/rugs etc. good luck. sounds like a fungal infection or a sweet itch issue.

Thanks for the reply. His diet has already been stripped back quite a lot and he is now turned out 24/7 (in his previous home he was only turned out every other day and that was only if the weather was nice!!). He does, however, have a MW turnout rug on as I feel a bit mean with him being out all the time. Silly I know, but he is used to being totally pampered and I didn't want it to be too much of a shock to his system!!
