itchy mane and tail

My 3 year old youngster has started getting a really itchy mane and tail. it wasn't that bad to begin with but i bought him in today and he constantly tried itching under his forlock and at the top of his mane as well as his tail. used the stable walls to the point where hair was being pulled out :(
I leave him out 24/7 but bring him in his stable when i am going to ride.
I have just started using a fly rug on him and he was a equilibrium fly mask on, coul he just be geting itchy because of this?
he does have a long mane (mid way down neck)

if anyone could tell me what it is and ways to relieve it that would be great!

I washed it today but he kept itching it after wards still (used tea-tree shampoo)
 
My pony has started to itch her tail too, well to be more prescise the skin either side of her tail on her bottom. No idea why, she's never suffered from sweet itch. Definately does not have mites. She has a full head to toe fly rug with massive tail guard so I really have no idea why she's doing this. For now washing her almighty heavy tail once a week seems to be working but it's becoming more frequent. I've pulled her tail to reduce the weight but can't work it out.

Your boy may be hot under his mane, why not put it in a running arab type plait and see if that helps?
 
My mare does not have sweet itch but rubs her neck and face and under belly hairless - the vet said its possible an allergy to buttercups or another plant she has eaten. The only way to be sure is blood tests.

This year she isnt as bad as i am using a herbal mix my herblaist sent me to make up and then drain and dab on the liquid - she isnt scratching as much and losing any hair this time!! I then experimented by not dabbing it on for a few day and she is scratching again!
 
if it were lice would he be itchy all over? i did think it could be lice, i could wash him with delousing powder just in case.
I could pull his mane, not sure as i want it to be protection in the winter but i suppose he can grow it back for then. I did do lots of plaits down it which i think helped a bit, i may do that again.

Went up there this morning and didn;t seem quite so bad (didn;t put fly rug or mask on last night) so i just put his mask on for in the day and will check him 2night.
 
pig oil and sulphur rubbed into the base of the mane, and onto the tail bone will probably sort this out. Fantastic stuff, we are using it for sweet itch as well as promoting hair growth and it really does work. sm x

But what my friend swears by is rinsing the crest and dock over with strong cold tea (hopefully if the horse isn't a grey). Apparently it stops them itching brilliantly! xx
 
Could well be the start of sweet itch. Most horses begin to show symptoms between the age of 2 and 4 years. Try spraying Avon skin so soft (the one with the insect repellant in it) it's excellent stuff even if it's not sweet itch I find it an excellent repellent. Would also second using the Net Tex Stop Itch and regular baths in louse shampoo.
 
sounds like sweet itch tbh, I would always turn out in a fly rug (if my mare is out even just overnight without then she goes mad itching). I would get his fly rug back on and give it a week or so for the allergic reaction to settle down. Net tex itch stop is fab too - handy for midlines and other areas that rugs don't cover!
P.S. can also get pig oil fron countrywide, lots of farmers merchants do it too.
 
It seems to be a bad year for itching, my mare who is in her teens is itching in her mane and tail for the first time ever. I've treated for lice but found the only way to keep her comfortable is to shampoo thoroughly with an anti bacterial shampoo, dry the affected area well then be very liberal with fly spray
