Itchy pony - can anyone help?

Hi there

I have a 14hh Connemara she is 8 years old and does have a tendency to be itchy in the summer, although I wouldn't say with full on sweet itch, I manage it well with rugs etc. Usually in the winter though it disappears completely but not this winter. She seems to be itching the very top of her head and her neck constantly. The skin is flaky and sore, she is in at night but I dont put rugs on her purely due to the fact she keeps ripping them itching and seems to be happier without one. I keep washing her neck with hibiscrub and use anti septic cream where is it sore. It is only a patch of skin on her neck and a coin size patch just behind where her bridle would go. She is stabled on her own so no other horses to pass anything on to her and she is regularly wormed etc. Does anyone have any suggestions??? I have read all sorts on here.

It could be feed related, you don't mention what you give her but alfalfa can cause itchiness as can too much starch/ sugar and anything that irritates the guts such as garlic can cause side effects.
I wouldn't use hibiscrub as that is extremely harsh and possibly counterproductive drying out the skin even more, try something tea tree oil based such as gold label wonder gel to reduce the cycle of itching, one came into my yard with similar rubs and it went completely with just one wash and daily applications of the gel.
 
Thank you. She is just on a basic course mix and the original dengie hifi along with some carrots. (she has been on this for years) I do have the gold label itchgon cream but will perhaps give the gel a go then. Thank you.
 
My daughter show pony is nearly 22, for several years now she has suffered with itchy weepy patches of skin all over her body, ever since she had a severe staphloccous skin infection, its been on going ever since, each winter and coat change these little patches appear, we usually been able to heal them with fuciderm from the vet. A few weeks ago my daughter won three sessions from Newmarket Equine Salt therapy, it's a very new thingwhich was devised for horses with respiratory problems but has been shown to really help horses with skin problems, ringworm, sweet itch etc, after speaking to Darrell we decided as it was free it was worth trying. I was very sceptical it would help but have to say I amazed at how it's helped. She had three sessions and after the third her skin was looking so much better, most of the patches had healed, she had another session today, apart from one small patch her skin is now clear. Darrell was so pleased with the results. Not only is her skin healed, her coat has a beautiful glossyshine she had been looking a bit off for a few weeks but today she has the cheeky glint back in her eyes, really does look a picture of good health. Shes now going to have another session and of January then from them every three months just to keep it up. It costs £30 a session, only takes twenty minutes, has to be done in an enclosed space but so worth while. I hadnt seen Trix for ten days but could see the difference in her today. They have a Facebook page and also if you Google then there's lots of information and you tube clips!
