Have you tried turning to homepathic? I know Chamomilla is very good for soothing irritable red skin, and comocladia would help the redness and inflammation.

Could it be more an allergy to something in his stable which is causing the problem? In which case building his immunity might help as well, so using aloe vera might help.

Might be another option for you...

Also bathing irritatable skin can cause more problems sometimes!

yer he started itchying last winter when he's clipped started growing out and since then hes been itchy the whole time.

some days hes not 2 bad but then the next day hes bad again im getting him clipped on monday so im hoping that might help what do you think ??

I would start changing things gradually, feed, bedding, shampoo ect.
Disinfect everything you can. Stable, tack, grooming kit.
Any chickens around the yard?
There are a few vets on here who may be able to help?
Sorry, thats about all I can think of.

Where is the itch? My mare has, all of a sudden, started itching just above and beside her tail. I sometimes think she will collapse as her back legs almost give way when she's leaning against a door or a wall trying to itch. Its not sweet itch and not lice. Really odd.

if it could be allergy related have you thought about trying the allergy testing?

role had this done they inject them with about 55 different things and see what causes a bump to see what they are allergic to?

yh i will try doing that
i don't no if this would make a difference but for about 2 years now hes been on half a bute a day because he split hes front tendons and since then the vet has said keep him on half a bute (will be saying to the vet soon if i can take him on it now seen as hes jumping and everythink now and has stayed sound ) but do u reakon the bute could be making him itchy silly question
and nope no chickens

Does the itching coincide with him being clipped?
Could it be a reaction to the clipper oil?
There are still biting insects about at this time of year and if he has been clipped he will be more exposed to being bitten.
Have you changed his feed for winter at all? Is there something he may be allergic too?

Does the itching coincide with him being clipped? no
Could it be a reaction to the clipper oil? no
yh thats true but i don't think its the insects that are making him itchy but it could well be .
and no i havn't changed hes feed at all this year the yard changed it last year really can't remember what it is i think its somthink like hi fiber chaff that doesn't have molessea(can't spell it lol sorry) in it
do you reakon beacause it doesn't have molessea in it thats whats making him itchy because i guess when they changed the feeds over thats when he started itchy but that might not be why he used to be on normal chaff

yes it did tell us what he was allergic to. unfortunately it was alot more complicated and we sadly lost him.

the testing did tell us what he was allergic to then he had immunotherapy injections which did help.

has your vet tried skin scrapes etc?

my boy had absolutley everything to try and figure out why he was so itchy. can pm you everything if you want me to?

Is he being stabled more?
Have you changed his bedding?
Have you washed his rugs - could it be the washing powder?
Could it be a pollen allergy? If so, it should stop soon.

My friends horse is the same, they did blood tests, he's allergic to dust, loads of different types of trees, flies, loads of feed etc, The list is endless.
The only feed she could give him was ride and relax and sloppy speedi beet.

All I can say is good luck. My boy started itching in January and hasn't stopped. I've spent over £4000 trying to find out the cause. I know lots of stuff that is itsn't but don't know what it is. Allergy testing showed that he is senstive to wheat, maize, dogs, mites and horsechestnut trees.

If one more person asks me if I have wormed him or deloused him I will scream!!!

At one time he was on 60 steriod tablets and 60 antihystamine tablets a day - they did nothing. Oh apart from getting a massive absess in his bum from the steriod injection. ( I have gory pics if you'd like to see them!!)

He was repeated bathed with Malaseb as per vets instructions, fully clipped out, skin scrapes, allergy testing, injections, changed bedding, new rugs, completely changed diet, homopathy, herbs, aloe vera inside and out etc etc etc all over the time span since January ....... and ........ he is still itching.

At the moment he is still out and I will have to keep him out for as long as possible because last winter he almost demolished two walls in his stable - BRICK WALLS I might add!!!

He doesn't itch himself overly, doesn't roll excessively, its only when you bring him in.

He spent 6 weeks at a friends yard and he itched at her yard too.

Doe your horse itch mainly when being ridden??
My horse will itch all year round, to the point that she will shake all her body (like a wet dog does) while being ridden.
When she is newly clipped she is fine, but within a few weeks when her clip starts to grow back the itching starts again.
With her it is to do with her getting to hot, and having to much coat, even though it doesnt look like it!

Sorry but it does sound like sweet-itch. I have a mare that suffers from it all year round, they use to say march-sept but because of the mild winters it's all year round. Get in touch with the sweet-itch people they will give a good idea. And the classic signs are under the chest, belly, front legs and udder

is she due for worming, this is the classic signs of pin worms
