Ted is rather itchy .. has been for a while and although I try to give him a proper groom I dont always have the time :/, and before I started loaning him his owner never really gromed him properly, bathed him onced but because he didnt like it she'd occasionally give him a squirt with the hose. Everytime I take his tack or a rug off him he scratches all over for ages .. rubs against walls and fencing (which is ruining it!) actually throws himself onto the floor to roll (especially after exercise) uses hes teeth feet ... anything to scratch himself. I'd love to give him a good bath but its far too cold now :/ how can I stop him being so itchy?

if you have time tomorrow give him a really thorough going over with a rubber curry comb? if he also tends to do it after you take off the rug, you could try brushing off the excess hair from the inside of the rugs, maybe that could help? good luck! xx
 
Scooby's always really itchy, but it gets worse when he's too warm. Is your pony heavily rugged? If it is really bad, D-Itch (can't remember who makes it

) works well, Scooby stopped itching for ages when he was put on it (he's only started again now because his clip grew out and I didn't swap his rug for a lighter one, so he got too hot and now he's in the habit again.

Would a lack of friends make a horse so itchy it throws itself to the floor?
I know of a horse that is always itchy and seems rather uncomfortable, doesn't wear a rug. In that case I think it would be worth the owner having a chat to the vet as it may be time for a skin scrape to be taken.
 
If by "friends" you mean lice ... then no as far as im aware, but Ive never had a horse with them before so I wouldnt know how to look for.

He has only thrown himself to the floor a few times ... normally after exercise when hes really sweaty but I thought Id mention it. Im going to try giving him a good groom every night (im gong to make time!) and see if that helps. I doubt his owner would agree to a skin scrape, according to her he's just annoying. It is annoying but I want to sort it out as hes obviously not comfortable :/
 
That level of itching isn't right, he's not being annoying and she should take the trouble to help him. Honestly, what are people like eh?
 
I know :/ Hes currently got a blanket clip which is growing out but whenhes going to be reclipped its all coming off to see if that helps ... hes very dusty too so hopefully it'll help make grooming easier
