I was putting Zoom's fly mask back on last night and I noticed she has rubbed herself raw on one ear :(

She has a small rub on one side under the mask but it isn't bad and the mask doesn't touch the new bit that is rubbed. Her mask has no ears and is fur lined.

Any ideas why she might have rubbed it....I can see or feel any fly bites around her ears. It is literally on the side of her ear and it's really red and sore, I've put some sudocreme on it. What to do??

It could be harvest mites, they've started to come out. I've noticed them on Harry's nose, tell tell orange appearing in little wrinkles. I'm about to start using Hydrophane insect repellent on him for them, people at my yard swear by it so fingers crossed.

Maybe she got bitten or stung by something there or perhaps reacted to a fly bite? Sudocreme is exactly what I would use, I would have thought that in a couple of days that would clear it up.

I'd also be interested in any replies to this because my mare has the same kind of flymask and seems to be very itchy too. She has not rubbed herself raw and there's no sore but she is definitely more itchy with it on- I thought it may have been the fleece lining??

She is definately itchy under the mask but the wierd thing is that the sore is not where the mask is touching. Poor Zoo-Zoo :(

Harvest mites sound gross!!

Mine sometimes gets itchy under her mask too, doesn't appear to be any irritation or rubbing, but I was thinking (esp with the warm muggy weather we have here) that she is getting a bit warm under it and that where it rests on her coat it might make it feel a bit squashed - like if you have a hat on for a few hours, rubbing you hand through your hair after can feel odd! I just make sure that twice a day when I check on her I take her mask off and give her a gentle groom over her face, then every few days I wipe over her head with a damp sponge.
urgh, just googled harvest mites, horrible!!

I thought everyone got harvest mites around this time of year.. We had them last year too, and tbh, it just made Harry very itchy, no lesions or such but didn't realise they could cause that... :S
