I have 3 terrier crosses, 2 short haired, one fluffy.

Cut a long story short, Ben the fluff ball is 'him that cant be trusted' so is not allowed out on yard unsupervised. The other 2 spend loads of time in the hay barn trying to catch bunnies. Bunnies = fleas and ticks from past experience.

All start scratching so I put on flea stuff. And repeat as Ben is still scratching ... ears, legs, body. Then flea shampoo and still he is itchy.

Have checked him over and no signs of fleas or mites.

Anyone else have itchy dogs?

Sometimes dogs can itch as a reaction to the food they eat, Iike humans having a wheat allergy. Might be worth looking into...

Flea bites can continue to itch long after the fleas are gone. You should never mix different sorts & some dogs react to some treatments by scratching.

Have the same problem with one of mine. But if they play in hay it could be harvest mites and these do not usually respond to flea/tick treatment. Check out a vet supply website for the right product - I use human Selenium shampoo which is exactly the same ( except for price!) as the product supplied by vets. You might have to look at Advantage. Mites burrow under the skin so you need to dose again after 1 week when they rehatch. Trouble is the skin can stay itchy for a long time despite the death of the little critters. Mites are hard to see - look between the toes, base of ears. If it continues as it has for mine ( since November) you could be looking at an allergy but your vet will no doubt follow a pathway of treatments before a final diagnosis.
If it was fleas you would need to check bedding etc against re-infestation.

My dog has always been an itchy type and needed to see vet a good few times. He is prescribed Malaseb shampoo which is very good, cortavance spray for stubborn patches and I have also started giving him salmon oil (Yumega Plus) which has also helped.

I keep him on a gluten free diet although his itching is caused by something outdoors, the vet thinks most likely pollen allergy or some type of mites.

Ben has never been an itchy type before, he is 12 or 13 and his food hasn't changed so think we can discount that one. Their bedding is washed every week and as they all sleep together I would have thought the others would be scratching.

Its the first time I have tried the flea tablets, so to start with I thought they weren't effective, so dosed them all again.

Left it a week and then Ben had a bath with Bob Martins flea shampoo.

He is still a bit itchy but there is nothing as far as I can see running round on him, just checked his toes and ears.

Will have a look at the Selenium shampoo and Advantage, if all else fails it will have to be a trip to the vet.

Thanks for your advice.

My mum's dachsie was very itchy, tried everything until last year a different vet recommended Compliderm. Dog has never looked so good, brilliant coat and not itchy at all now.

Have you tried antipruritic dog shampoo?
How's his skin looking? Is it red/dry/flaky etc?

I reckon it has to be mites, but I can not see them, but his has a longish silky coat. His skin looks a nice healthy pink colour (he has a mainly white coat). He is now licking his paws and scratching his ears as well as the back of his legs, but its sort of sporadic. I don't understand why the other two seem unaffected. Will look into mite treatment and if that doesn't sort it then its off to the vet.
