i have had my new pup almost 2 weeks, she is 12 weeks old. Before we picked her up we know she had mites, not surprising given her and the rest of her litter were living the high life with free run on the farm and were in among the pens herding calves:D Before we collected her she was frontlined. She was/is in good bodily condition with a healthy coat. she had a bit of scurf when we got her home and was pretty itchy. I gave her a good brush and after a vet check up I bathed her with baby shampoo as advised. Im reluctant to bath too often but she was pretty stinky :D It helped clear up the scruf and her skin has always been and still is quite normal, no red patches no sign of irritation. The vet has confirmed no 'little visitors' are remaining and yet she still scratches, and scratches and scratches:rolleyes: The vet thinks it is because she will still have been itchy after having mites/fleas although they are gone, and that it may now have become habit. (She is on vetbed, washed in non bio powder btw). Ive been though having a dog with extensive allergies before and i know food could be irritating her but tbh there is no sign of irritation at all on her anywhere. She just scratches... and is obviously itchy as she cries with frustration and cant be distracted until she has hit the spot! She is on a good quality puppy food (Arden Grange) and has lovely normal poops - isnt it sad how us dog people are thrilled by this?:o Scratching isnt limited to any one particular area either btw.

sooo... im thinking of trying to get something to soothe her skin and just try to break the scratch/itch cycle. But what ? Any ideas? Im also going to ask the vet if she is too young to get an evening primrose oil capsule as i found that helped one of my other dogs.

and a pic of my wee Star who says she might let you have a chew on her StagBar for reading this:D

balls - can't see pic as i'm at work

Anyway, my youngest lab puppy was itchy mad when i got her! Thought it was fleas, it wasn't. Food fine, no particular area was being scratched etc.

My vet told me it's common for puppies to itch as they grow, stretching = itchy. Never heard it before but i left Maisey itch as much as she liked and eventually stopped! :D

Ive noticed that some pups do seem to be quite itchy with no obvious reason...well now we know why!!

I have a collie who is allergic to flea bites, just one and she will scratch herself spotty. Ive started using AllergyX biscuits from Verm X and after a week or so she certainly did seem to stop itching. It may have just been coincidence but Ive kept her on them and dispite finding a little visitor on her yesterday we havent seen any scratching so maybe they work!

I suspect your pup will grow out of it once she has stretched enough!

Feed raw! Loads of people tell me it's stopped the pup itching.

If it's a habit, though, try to break it by distracting her when she does it: can she be given a kong toy or something to distract or would the big lads nick it? (Zak stole all three last night-demon child!)

I had golden retriever who had itchy skin .We found that maize based feed heated up and it triggered the problem ,not sure if arden range has maize in feed.My pup is on raw ,sometimes semi cooked as I cant bear offal :p smells .Before I switched to raw he was reallly smelly /farty dog so might be feed to consider ,although I have heard good things about arden.
Pretty pup :D

thanks guys... we've fed raw before but it wasnt for us, am really pleased with AG though :) It was worrying me MC as thats the thing - i cant distract her from scratching what ever i try! Have been back to speak to vet and they took a sellotape test and look under a scope but defo no crawlies. Am going to be giving her a wee bit of EPO to see if that helps and have frontline sprayed again *just* to be sure.

We have used on Chlo Sebocalm, from the vet (or online). Works wonders. She also gets a glug of oil on her food xxxx

We have a GSD with very complex dermatitis - she's on lots of meds etc but that's just her! Could it be skin allergies in general? :S
My Goldie scratches when she is stressed such as in kennels and usually makes herself bald :( the vet whacks her on steroids to stop the itching, hence breaking the habit and allowing the skin to heal. We also used Malaseb shampoo from the vets and try our best to distract them when they are scratching/itching/licking!

If not raw, what about raw days during the week, or a frozen food like DUCK?

My fella's itchiness is a combination of allergies and intolerance to high levels of protein.

Also use Malaseb, and Piriton.
