I have a very itchy 15 week old Lab. I'm trying to go down the food eradication route. I currently have him on purely white fish, but only a few days so far. I don't feel like this is a very complete diet. How long would you leave him on just this so as to really see results and what might be the next thing to add. I have, squash, sweet potato or sardines in sunflower oil.

Thanks

Have you been to the vet? If not then please book an appointment, and in the meantime feed your puppy a complete dog food.
It may be diet related, it may also be something completely different like parasites or environmental.

It is dangerous to perform a strict food elimination trial on such a young growing puppy.
I have seen first hand problems with puppies that are only fed one thing like chicken eg: easily broken bones.
You would be causing a lot more problems long term than you may think.

My lab doesn't do well with fish, too many carrots, and some wet foods (idk why on that one). She actually does best on a sensitive lamb and rice kibble by Bosch (here in Germany), to my horror ? I wanted to go raw with her, or for her to be on the best quality food, but this particular one is "it" for her. Her coat shines, her stomach is happy, and gives her what she needs. My last Lab was also on a lamb and rice diet, come to think of it.

She also gets some dried or cooked chicken mid-day. Usually chicken and plain rice will work for her too.

What did the vet say?

My Lab does scratch/itch a wee bit during fur changes/a blowout.

when i brought home my 2 m ,schnauzer puppy, she was very itchy, like your pup.
Looking very carefully I could see tiny whitespecks like dandruff…
It turned out she had ,in layman’s terms, walking dandruff…a form of mite.

She was too young to use classic treatments ,so we used a generic anti parasitic shampoo..( friskies) …and when she got to 3 months I used a puppy frontline.
Before you go straight to a diet change,I’d consider getting the vet to look at her skin to see if she has external issues( as above).

It can be mites but also can be diet related. When my 8wk old pup came home he had dandruff on his head and was itchy and even scooting. Not parasites as he’d had treatment the vet gave when we registered him. He came with Royal Canin puppy from the breeder. After checking the ingredients, it was full of sugars - basically junk food so we switched to McAdams puppy dry mixed with Lilys kitchen organic puppy wet food and he’s thriving. All his symptoms cleared quickly. He’s seen 3 vets so far (vaccinations and just been neutered) and all have commented on what an exceptionally healthy pup he is. Many of the commercial dog foods are junk unfortunately, full of grains etc. So try and find a high quality feed and also get him checked at the vet, they’ll give you wormer/mite/flea treatment suitable for puppies.

What did the vet say?
An exclusion diet needs to be 3 months long as symptoms can in some cases last this long, too long for a growing pup to be in just kne thing.
You would be better to try a novel patient such as boar or venison, try the likes of millies wolfheart for diet advice is the vet is on board with it.
