I have got a lovely 11yo collie cross, lab etc... who suffers from itchy skin he is always licking his groin and gets quite red sometimes, i dont want him to have steroids all the time, but do you think it is his diet he has chudleys mixed with chappie plus any household scraps, any suggestions please.

Sulphur tablets! Work very well on our old Border Terrier who rubs himself raw in the summer when pollen and things are at their highest. You can get them from the chemists or health shops, depending on dog weight, give 1 or 2 morning and night until it's stopped flaring then cut back to 1 a day. Ben only has them when he's itchy cos I don't want him to become immune to the relief it gives him. You can also get lump sulphur from a pet shop/vet which you can leave in the water bowl.

Somebody else who uses sulphur, thought it was one of those forgotten remedies maybe I'm not THAT old!

Also cut down on any biscuites some dogs are allergic to them

Sulphur hasn't worked for our border terrier (but I couldn't get the blocks) but she is MUCH better now that she is taking Piriton anti-histamines. We started on twice a day but she just has them as necessary now. Before she started on them her skin was becoming very dry and we thought she would have to go back on steroids but the piriton has turned it round.
