My mare had her foal last night, 2 weeks early, a little liver chestnut colt, but he'll probably turn grey. I was so worried about her after last year but thankfully there was no major problems. I checked her at 12:30, she was fine, no sign of waxing, slackening etc, was munching her hay, then looked at monitor again at 1:30 and foal was born!! It must've been a fairly easy birth, he needed a little help to get up and then she wouldn't let him suck, she kept squealing and kicking, it was her 'first' foal so she was just a bit confused so the vet gave her a mild sedative to calm her a bit. Then when she was letting him search under her teat he wasn't quite able to latch. Vet said we might have to bottle feed the colostrum but after some help (basically lifting him under and putting his muzzle right near teat) he got the idea and hasn't stopped since. The mare is now fine with him but not at all protective and he's very friendly, probably because he had to be handled at only a few hours old.
Havn't decided on names yet, his dad is Grange Bouncer (ID) and mum is Buzzy, in fact havn't really any idea as I didn't want to jinx it so any suggestions much appreciated. I've taken lots of pics which I'll post later.
