Its about time animals were protected under the law and deterent punishment given.

Absolutely disgusting, those poor dogs god knows how they survived that existence.

I see she had been banned before for 3 yrs perhaps in cases like that those people could go on to some sort of register and be checked. Maybe they should have to pay quite a hefty licence to re-own animals which would help police it.

It seems to me with cruelty and neglect these people always seem to have had previous form.

I agree, as a country the tax made from animals must be astounding, jobs/feed stuff/products/what charities rake in (breeding obs could be added too), its a huge industry and yet we allow them to suffer with little consequence, we need another body (a more competent one) that the RSPCA and strict laws to go with it.
There is no propper deterrent to stamp out animal cruelty it's a farce.

^^^^^^

Well said CAYLA.

We see more and more hideous abuse and time and time again these evil people are let off with a slap on the wrists.

Anything who feels pain and suffering needs protection under the law be it animal or child.

But they do have protection under the law.

Surely a lifetime ban is a good outcome?

It's the magistrates who choose and decide the sentence, not anybody else.

With regard deterrents, the Animal Welfare act allows magistrates the opportunity to sentence up to £60.000 fine and up to 6 mths in prison. Surely that should be enough of a deterrent?

Unfortunately, just like any other type of crime, people don't listen do they, and still commit them. Not sure how we can ever stop it taking place in the first place.

I agree a dog licence may be effective though.

How often do you see prison sentences handed out, very rarely and IMO the punishment very rarely reflects the suffering the animal went through. Magistrates are constrained withe full prisons so can only pass token punishments IMO.

There has to be some real deterrents that will mean something. A hard hitting reduction in benefits or attachment of earnings deduction, a prison sentence that is served and not commuted because the prisons are full, community graft.

Something has to change.

Prison sentences are more common than the public realise, but sadly they don't all make the press. Though I fully agree, they aren't handed out enough by magistrates in neglect and cruelty cases, certainly not as much as I would like to see.

It's a tough one, like you say, the prisons are full up, and worryingly there are offenders doing much more 'serious' and dangerous (to humans) crimes and walking free with just tags and curfews.

It's a sad world we live in, and I'm not sure on the best way, or the most viable and effective way, forward to prevent it.

It is down to the public at the moment to report any breach of ban, unfortunately, but that being said, don't be under the misconception that these reports are few and far between, they're not, the public are pretty perceptive when they know a person has a ban. :)

I think some sort of database between courts/prosecutors/police would be helpful with regard any bans brought about by another agency prosecuting, so that police are aware of it when they recieve any calls to an address for police matters.

If they move area then there is no chance of anyone knowing really. Its a tough one. I just hope those that abuse and neglect animals one day get what theyre in for. :(

Yes so do I.:)

It's not easy, and there's no real watertight solution. People like you say move on, change names etc etc. But they often pop up again, as this person did in the OP, and get their come uppance. I suppose the best we can do is wait until they do and hope someone reports. :(
