....that bug me now, it's the bugs!

Why is when you try to do one thing that's good for you horse, it comes with a consequence?

I've been bringing Miraed in during the day and leaving her with some soaked hay, to keep her weight down and prevent her from getting lami but when I got down the yard straight after work I found her with a huge lump on her throat and lovely sore

Now you can imagine I had a quick panic attack thinking of all the possible things it could be...abscess etc but then realised after closer inspection she'd been bitten obviously rubbed it over the stable door and she'd got little humps and lumps under her belly too

So she's booted and suited in a flysheet and caked in powerfazer, so god only knows what she'll look like when I get down later on.

These sensitive TB's eh...who'd have em!:D anyway the lump has gone now.:)

But recomendations for any nice soothing creams for itchy or bitten areas where the hair has rubbed off?

Anything like that I use a solution of TCP I've got diluted in a sprap bottle in my stable all the time, I use it on his tail to stop midges biting, its worked for the last 2-3 years I've been using it, I just spray it on any lumps and bumps/bites he may have and they're usually gone by the morning. You just have to try and make sure it is bites and not an allergic reaction which may need veterinary attention

Actually I have some TCP at home, good thinking.

No it's definitely just midgy bites, one of the other TB's on the yard had an allergic reaction but they were differnt lumps (as in the feel and the size of them) and he was covered in them from head to toe and the vet attended him, if thought in anyway it was that the vet would of been called.:)

Well every year my horse used to rub his tail say in April/May, have a huge bald patch with took the rest of the year to grow back, this had happened in the last 5 years he hadn't suffered with sweet itch before, anyway I was at a show and someone told me about the TCP, they'd had a pony who suffered really bad and it'd worked on her, so I thought I'd give it a try, having tried most other things ! Alva sweet used to work but didn't after a while for some reason.

Thank you I'll give it a whirl.

I don't think she gets sweat itch as such but from what I can remember when she used to be up at our yard years ago (when I used to ride her for the owner), she did sometimes get the odd scabby/dandruff patch near her poll area and sometimes near the chest area just in summer, I once treated her with Coopers FR plus on and it did the trick (keeps the flys off and seems to helps itchy skin), I know nothing ever flared up in winter or until the flys were about anyway, so I'll get some in but in the meantime this weekend I'll give her a good bath put some TCP on. :)

can you put TCP on their faces?

So far fingers crossed touch wood the only palce we seem to be getting any itching this year is on his face, yes we have fly masks for everyday of the week (he plays a game of hunt the fly mask with me). Seems to start around the eyes every year and then spread out from there....am trying itchgon cream at the moment but although soothing don't think it is atually preventing him from wanting to itch cos of the pesky flys

Well I wouldn't spray anything on the face, but if I was going to put it on the face (forelock for example) I'd just dab some on with cotten bud.

But you can get TCP cntiseptic ointment in a cream which is supposed to soothe pain and can be used for piles :D, itching, skin irritations and pimples so I guess you can use that on a horses face if needs be.
