When they all develop the "puppy dog stare" over the fence to the yard and make me feel guilty for not showering them with ad lib hay all day . As cobs, they don't have the "stop eating" switch and as the amount of poo I'm picking up daily hasn't reduced, unfortunately I CAN tell that they are still finding enough to eat in the field, even if they disagree greatly!!! *sigh* They do get a feed in the evening and a portion of hay each, but at this time of year they insist on following me around the field whilst I'm poo-picking, staring hopefully. I swear if they could open their mouth and point to it, they'd all do that too!

Oh I know the feeling, our hairy New Forest thought it'd be fun last night to go through the electric fence into the haybarn (the hay is hidden behind the bailer, a lorry and he can't see or get to that) and eat the 2 haynets I'd put ready, and ate about 1/2 an open bale that was at the front, the rest of that bale he's trodden into a pulp, made a nest, slept on it and pooped over the edge of his nest in 5 heaps.

Battery is now nicely recharged and he gets a bib clip tomorrow teehee:D

I wouldn't have minded so much but there was still hay in the field shelter, mostly untouched, as well as a new section of fresh grass last week! So he'd clearly walked through well before midnight, allowing for the amount of hay eaten in the shelter being about the amount I'd expect eaten by the other one!

They are hungry, it is cold and they still need to generate heat and keep their tummies working.
I appreciate that.... but it's not THAT cold yet and they're rugged AND there is still grass in the field... it's just they know that mum's a soft touch (if they persist with the sad-eyes!) and rather than having to work for it, at some point they know they'll get a nice easy-peasy pile of loose sweet-smelling fresh hay all to themselves. Oh... and then of course starts the "your pile looks better than mine" dance! :p

Mine is the same. He stares at me and looks very sad when I leave without giving him any hay!

Hes gone into his winter paddock today so wont see him now until all the grass is gone :)
