I'm worried sick as I can't even go within a few feet off a dentist chair and now I have I need a lot off work. They are going to do it all under IV sadation all at once.
Has anybody had this done? If so what's it like?

Yep, it's amazing.
I don't do needles in my mouth - I had one little needle in my arm and I was sparko, can't remember a thing at all until I got home and was lay in bed.
Sore for maybe 24 hours but absolutely fine afterwards. I had 4 fillings and 3 wisdom teeth removed (in 2 sessions).
Don't worry x

I am so dental phobic I have this done for fillings. I am always terrified when I go, but dont know anything about the treatment and dont even remember coming home usually. I have had to resort to writing in my diary after the visit that it didnt hurt at all, so the next time Im having a panic I just look back at the entry ! The only place that does it near me is 10 miles away.

I've had IV sedation twice for colonoscopies. Basically you are sort of awake however you definitely don't remember anything afterwards (thank goodness as big tube in my botty is not my idea of fun).
Was really chatty when OH came to pick me up afterwards and a bit out of it afterwards, similar to feeling a bit tipsy (he said it was like I'd had a few strong vodkas and was really talkative but seemed otherwise OK).
I felt normal and certainly dont remember anything about either procedure.
I would not worry the least if I was you.
Sweet dreams and you will be just fine, I promise. :D

Amazing stuff. The last thing I remember was looking at the dentist and thinking ooh, he's gone all blurry, how funny. Then everything was finished, my husband walked me home and I promptly fell asleep on the settee. I don't remember anything about the dental work. Which suits me fine, lol! The initial injection didn't hurt either. I know it's hard not to stress and worry, but you honestly don't need to. x

I need a lot off work which they would like to do all in one season, the nearest place is 35 miles away but iv gotta do it. I'm so scared I feel like a prat and just can't see how you don't remember anything.

Me neither, but you just can't remember anything at all!!
My mum reckoned I'd still be awake, but honestly, i can't remember a thing at all either time.
She had IV sedation for a full knee replacement - shows how out of it you are!

Ive had it for a wisdom tooth out at the hospital, this will sound weird but i can remember it all but i cannot if you know what i mean lol. I remember my mouth open and someone there and thats it. I said to him after when are you doing it only to be told i did it 5 min ago.

I did however get very chatty and would not shut up talking rubbish then fell asleep all afternoon. Would have it again in a second.

Go for it. I had this for the first time a month ago as have a really fear of dentists. Had 2 teeth out, normally I'm a gibbering wreak and sore for days after. This time I instructed them to have everything ready no waiting in the waiting room and to just put the IV in and go so I couldn't stress. They did exactly that and I was fine. No painkillers after or sore month and I was even brave enough after to go back and have a check up without IV. I 'woke up' just as they were packing everything away and was back behind my desk an hour later. Had a lovely nights sleep that night too.

I should of done this years ago instead of trying to avoid the dentist and stressing myself out when I did go.

I would follow everyone and say 'Have it!' Much better to get it over with AND have no pain!

One thing that no one told me when I had my wisdom teeth taken out was that I could vomit back up a clot of blood. It was gruesome at the time and rather scary but, once I knew it was normal I was fine. It didn't hurt at all. I don't do blood OR needles!!

Since then I've had dentistry treatment under a local (in the mouth) and surprised myself by coping very well with it!

You will get over your phobia and you will get the treatment you need. Think positively and enjoy the thought that the tooth aches will all be a thing of the past!

I had it last October, I had a needle in the back of my hand. It was ok, I still knew what was going on. Once they had finished I stood straight up to leave the room which I wasn't supposed to do!

If you have a normal reaction to medication you will fine, if you soak it up quick, don't do why I did, make sure you tell them!

Its brilliant. My phobia is so bad that at one point I couldnt even walk past a dental surgery and I certainly wasnt able to take my son when he was small (my Dad used to take him). My teeth got so bad I had to go and was referred for IV sedation. I have it for anything however small as the minute a dentist comes near me I freak out and get quite aggressive. You honestly dont remember or feel anything and it is the only way I can cope. OH comes with me as my "responsible adult" and after a good sleep on the sofa am as good as new. Best dentist joke, "Why are dentists scarier than Daleks? Dentists can climb stairs" Go for it, honestly, itll be fine x

I have intravenous valium loads and loads of time for dental work. Including 4 wisdom teeth out in one hit. I now take valium tablets if i want any work done, your dentist or GP can prescribe them. It's well worth ti.

WOW!!!!! didnt know you could have this done, i havent been to the dentist for 7 years and know i need loads of work done and although the cost is offputting its mainly the fear which has stopped me. thanks all, i will now try and find out where i can have this done.....can anyone give me an idea of cost and how to find a dentist who will do this.....sorry to hijack this thread but i feel quite relieved that i may be able to find a solution.....:D

Yep had it to have a tooth cut out of my palette, I remember him putting the IV and thinking 'this hasn't worked I feel fine' next thing I know I'm sitting up and they're done, I felt fine, until I stood up and I felt like I'd had six shots of tequila!! My legs just buckled haha.

I remember tiny blurry snippets of it but none of it was distressing at all, I remember him stitching because I remember seeing the thread and also a few other bits but totally relaxing, sort of like being half asleep. Definitely go for it, I'd recommend it to anyone, I'd definitely have it again if I needed more extensive work.

I had it done on 4 wisdom teeth because they had hooks for rots and i so dont do jabs with out biteing fingers..lol I come out room crying my eyes out then chatting all way home in car. Cant says i remember any of it...I went to bed to sleep it off. Your be fine and well worth it. Good luck xx

You've already had plenty of replies but just another success story for you, in case you needed anymore!
I have a terrible fear of the dentist. 2 years ago, I was referred to the Dental Hospital in Bristol and they were very good to me. I had consultations and xrays and then had my appointment. They gave me liquid sedation first, before the IV but I don't remember the IV line doing in or any of the work. Apparently, throughout, I was able to say (as well as you can with your mouth wide open) 'continue' and 'I'm ok' but to me, I died and then came back to life. The first thing I remember was the pain of the lady taking the tape off my hand to take the IV out, I woke up telling her to be quicker about it, like you have to with plasters!
Afterwards, I didn't go back to my dentist and then I went travelling. When I moved to Bristol in August I was determined to get over my fear, I went for a check up, cried, paniced, but mostly did it. Then, I went for a cleaning, nothing invasive and even I had to admit it was fine, it didn't hurt.
Then I went for a filling top right. This, actually, was ok. It was horrid, for me, but it was ok. I was watching Finding Nemo throughout (thank you lovely dentist who put the kids TV back on just for me)!
Then, I went in to have a filling bottom right. It was crap, she ran an hour late (no fault of hers or the sugery) and I was so so worried, that I couldn't have it done. The numbing gel didn't take because you're more moist (any excuse to use my favourite word) on the bottom gums, next to your tounge, and then she kept coming at me with the needle and I couldn't do it. But I tried. I'm going back to the Dental Hospital. I've had my consultation and just waiitng for the appointment.
After I've had the two fillings I need, I will then go to my dentist for a clean and to a hygenist regularly, to help. I am aiming to go to the hygenist once every couple of months. Excessive but I'm determined to get over this.
You will be fine and they will look after you.
They will probably tell you this but you will need an escort and you'll need supervising for 24 hours afterwards. You won't be allowed to make any big decisions or operate anything. I wouldn't even drive a car in the state I was.
I managed to direct my friend back to my house (she was hopeless with remembering how to get to it), she put me in my jammies (she saw me almost in the nuddy pants as she took my bra off for me but I don't remember!!!), and then I went to sleep. At 8pm, I woke up (I got home and went to sleep at 1pm, just to give you some idea of time scale) and had soup and bread, all fine. Later that evening, I got a text saying 'it was good to talk earlier' and it turns out I'd had a 20 minute conversation with my friend at about 4pm and I hadn't a clue. She did say I sounded sleepy! I talk in my sleep a lot and will regularly have conversations with those around me (I am good entertainment at sleepovers. Sleepovers? How old am I? 8?!) and I also text when asleep too so am not surprised I had a conversation!
Anyway, back to the point, you will be fine :) Just think positive. One thing I do, is write a quick note to myself before anything big happens like that saying something like 'Right now, I feel fine, I feel well and I must remember that even when I feel rough, I will feel well again soon'. I tend to do that when I feel a cold sore coming or something like that. It sounds really stupid but I am a visual learner so if I can read something I wrote, it will jog my memory and will get me remembering I'll be ok again soon!

Trust me on this. i am really well qualified. I never ever went near a Dentist period. At 18, although everything looked ok I badly needed treatment. I suppose the truth is I was terrified of injections & had missed all the routine child innoculations. So, I met my fear head on & took a job as a trainee dental nurse! Dealing with & passing injections to the Dentist all day long. IV sedation is amazing & I worked in a specialist clinic for 10 years. The reason patients have no recolletion of events is because the medication used (Hypnoval) has a hypnotic effect. Bet none of you can remember that once under the influence you still have the same local anaesthetic injections in your mouth. (thats how good it is) So my advice to anyone & everyone is do not even worry about it. You really will be fine. I conquered my fear. I also married the Dentist. LOL

I had some work done a few years back under IV as I am horrendously needle phobic. It's like having an entire night out in 20 seconds! I remember having the jab, sitting in the chair for what felt like 5 minutes (more like 2 hours) and then being driven home and crashing out. Will definitely do it again if I ever need more work done.

Thanks everybody that's great, iv got to have x rays done first but I'm sure I can manage that bit. It will be the appointment after that which will be the iv and I'm such a wimp.
FRESHMAN wow what a turn around and than marrying the dentist. |0|

I used to have sedation for the dentist - like everyone said it's great! You don't feel or remember anything. I used to have a real phobia about dentists.

However - a few years ago I found a new dentist who is amazing, and had big fillings re-done, and even a root canal without any sedation needed! He's not cheap but i wouldn't have any work done with anyone else. You get to wear 3d glasses and watch movies - I watched friends!! :D
