Having ploughed his way through 4 dentists in 24 months my lovely GG (who is on lease to our friends) has been told that if he is to be done, he'll need IV sedation as sedazine (even a full syringe) just doesnt work on him. He sniffs the dentists a mile off and gives them hell poor people lol. He is only 14.1hh but has a good go at trampling on them, chomping their arms, etc. He last had his teeth done in November, after too much sedazine and a Lot of patience from a dentist who now wont do him because of the hasstle/time etc lol...

He's never had a stressful experience in his life, and knows exactly what he's doing......gerr. A schoolmaster and complete gentleman in all respects, apart from when dentists try to get near his gnashers. He lets me feel his teeth, and they seem a teeny bit sharp, but apart from that all in order (he's 8y/o) but still, I have his teeth/back/general physio done religeously.
Our old dentist on the Forest before we moved to Pastyland is the only guy to date who could do him, he was amazing, and sometimes think of taking the pony back to him once a year.

What Id like to know is, is this as safe as sedazine, just works immediately rather than a couple of hours after? Also does it wear off quicker? Has anyone had a bad experience with it? Any general info much appreciated on this.

Also, hehas an event on Sun and dentist & vet due to attend wed. If rasping only is this enough time for the poor chap to recover...

Here is the culprit :

I always had to have the vet to sedate Amy at dentist time - she simply would not tollerate being rasped.

She was sedated on the odd ocassion for other reasons to, and never experienced any problems.

it should be enough time after if just rasping however may not be enough time for the dope to clear his system...ie if tested he would fail! something like domesedan is about 4days minimum to clear system. imo it is much safer than sedalin/sedazine type things and the effects should last for about 45mins or so depending on how much he's given and how it hits him. some a half a ml will send them sleepy for agaes othere 1.5mils will give a solid half hour of sleep before they start coming around. depends on the horse really

Both my horses need to be sedated to have their teeth done and I've never had any problems with it. Other than it is very expensive!

When I got Milly, I had her sedated as there was quite a bit of work to be done to her mouth and I didn't want her upset or in pain. All went like a dream.

Jerry my very old lad is a bloody nightmare when it comes to his teeth. Because of his age he knows every trick in the book. He wouldn't even let my vet near him to sedate him the last time he came! So, I had to do it. Bloody horse!

It is a bit of a worry each time we do it because of his age. And, despite being doped to the hilt, Jerry is still capable of being a tit! He managed to lift his front legs off the ground last time, lost his balance and knocked the student vet flying into a bucket of water!!!!!!!!!!

Domesedan works very well indeed and it is by far the safest way to deal with Jerry.
