was down the yard this eve doing the normal routeen,so bring them in, pick out feet & check over, feed & then if needed rugs (if like tonight there is below zero temps only) i have 2 native ponies (currently teddy bears), one sec A & a dartmoor. finally clear away buckets, wish them goodnight (with a nose kiss
grin.gif
& scratch to the withers) & then walk back down to the gate (checking fence on route).
anyhow this car pulls up and woman (late 50's) gets out & is waveing franticlly at the gate with a cloth (turned out to be a carrier bag!) so i walked down thinking she was lost or needed help, where she proceeded to start shouting how barbaric i was leaving those poor things out in all that mud, with no clothes on to freeze all day & that she was reporting me to the RSPCA (she got quite nasty when i offered to lend her my phone) she then informed me if they were out like that tomorrow she would be putting blankets no them from home.

EXCUSE ME!

my response from that point went downhill rapidly & isnt really repeatable on a public forum, but the underlying jist was that if she sets foot into my paddocks i will have her for tresspass & assult on my boys.

i have fantastic grazing still (not sure how) the boys go out all day most days in the front paddock for 3 weeks then have a week in the bigger back (summer) paddock to give front one chance to rest. ok the gateways are a little boggy now but if i can still walk down there in my crocs & not get wet feet it cant be that bad can it?? i know a lot of people around here that would kill for paddocks still with over 6" of grass over 95% of it.

sorry guys rant over, i just had to vent somewhere (other that my fist/her face) choccy biccies & cocoa for anyone getting the the end of that.

sorry but pmsl at the thought of you ringing the police for asault on the horses

Its so stupid of her to believe that your neddies are freezing, when they have a full winter coat!
tongue.gif
Have you any pictures of wild horses eg. Icelandic ones? stick a picture on your gate and leave a little message, along the lines of "these horses live outside in snow, and havent frozen yet!"

Jeez some people are just damn pain in the arse...esp when they know nothing about your horses....i'd have told her if she set foot on my land she'd have been done for tresspassing - like you say...and so you should too.

God help those animals out there that actually need some help aye....

ha!! what does she think horses do in the wild then?! of course little native ponies can handle mud and cold, we live in britain! maybe she just isn't very horsey?
smile.gif
and wow you have a lot of grass left!
blush.gif
hehe, love the nicknames btw!! x

I really wouldn't worry about it - if she wants to waste RSPCA time to come out and look at a pair of very happy ponies - then I'm sure she's welcome to....

eeediot!

Tell her to come to ireland and see what real cruelty is, and the fact that there is f*** all anyone will do about it in this country. OMG, i would kill to have that grass, i cant go near the stables without wellies, and the entrance to the fields in about 3 ft of s***. My farrier loves it, (not really, he's sound), but my mare comes in from the field on a regular basis minus a shoe, from the sucking action that you get with mud. Tell that lady to get over it. As they say, a little knowledge is DANGEROUS. You did well to not slap her, dont know that i would have held my temper. Some people, eh!

Bl**dy people, i had a complaint about one of my ponies a few years ago, ponie was lying down in field and a woman complained that its feet were soooo long that they had grown over it back shoes, to the point that you could'nt see the shoes, sighs.. you could'nt see the shoe's because it was only shod in the front, stupid woman, just because you collect for the RSPCA, does'nt mean you know ANYTHING about horses, sorry rant over.

oh that has tickled me!

No wonder you want to rant!

It's sooooo frustrating when people are like that. Years to come you will look back and laugh at the ol'bat!

There was a neglected pony at my old yard. He was in his late 30's so naturally it was to be expected to see all of his bones.... but he wasn't fed consistently. The owners had him stabled 24/7, only came down every few days to give him a handful of hay and water. (YO wouldn't let us give him anymore as we would be 'interferring'). He had clumps of poo stuck to his coat and hooves that long they curled up like pixy feet. A livery rightly so reported them to the RSPCA. Sods law - when the RSPCA turned up, the owners had been down that dy and given the poor pony hay and water. As of this, the RSPCA 'presumed' he was getting looked after and his appearance was just extreme old age!

Oh the joys of people... I actually HAD the RSPCA appear once... some 'lovely' person had reported me for riding 'a seriously lame horse' and not looking after either of them... the RSPCA came down, I was quite happy (obviously) to show them both my horses, and the vets report telling me to RIDE my beloved mare who had very slight arthritis, yep, she was a bit stiff first thing in the morning... they left debating whether to advise her she risked prosecution for getting them out at the weekend as am emergency! Not sure if it was just deserts as I was really sorry about her horse, but for someone (yep same girl) who had laughed at me for wearing knee boots as 'they look SOOOO stopooopid' wasn't laughing so much when her lovely horse went down on the road and was off work for a long time :-(

Oh dear - some people! We had one like that round here who told us we were cruel for putting our old Sec A out without a rug! She had a coat so thick you could hardly put your hand through it and only went out for a few hours a day as she was a laminitic. We did try to explain that her fur was as good as a rug and that she was designed for living out on Welsh mountains, but the woman still wouldn't have it!

Tell her to look at the latest guidance on the defra site, 30 pages of advice about horse care, with a section on native ponies.
I have had people wondering why my horses were blind folded....fly masks!!!!!!!!!!!!

This has happened to me. An RSPCA Inspector phoned me from my field to say that that he was checking my ponies due to phone call from a member of the Public. We had had a lot of snow and the lady said they were freezing without rugs and should be in a stable. The Inspector was more than happy with three well rounded hairy natives who had dug through the snow to the grass underneath.

He was going to phone her back and explainthat they were native ponies and were warm, happy and comfortable. We both agreed that we were pleased that she had phoned becouse far too many people ignore animals suffering.

When I have had people stop and complain that my hairy ponies don't have rugs I try and calmly explain and show them how thick their coats are and if that doesn't work I then rant.

I had a similar thing at work - someone wanted me to come and view the "cruelty" at the end of her road this summer. She said the horse had a muzzle "to stop it biting", was bindfolded by a mesh bandage and was covered in a mesh sheet "to keep it clean". I asked her if she had spoken to the owners but she said they had been agressive with her when she had removed the muzzle so he could eat

.

I tried to explain about grazing muzzles and that the pony probably had a fly rug on - but no she wanted to call the rspca
crazy.gif
- not sure what happened - but advised her not to remove things from other peoples horses in future.

LMAO some people shoudl keep their noses out lol
We had RSPCA here saying one of the ponies looked unwell...the report said he was an off yellowish colour :P... the pony is palomino
grin.gif
i couldnt contain my laughter!
Another time they came saying he was never wearing a rug so people passing were concerned...i told her to go have a look for herself as pony IS wearing a rug it just happens to be brown coloured like him, lol they will complain about him wearing dirty coats now *sighh*

Lad who works for my farrier has shetlands, he was reported to the RSPCA because they weren't wearing rugs! How is it these idiots seem to get a quick response from RSPCA yet knowledgeable people struggle to get them to come out to horses in real need
crazy.gif

Ditto what MM said. I wouldn't worry, if your neds really do need an RSPCA visit, chances are you won't get one
grin.gif

Have to laugh though, some people just don't have any other worry in the world other than to poke their noses into other peoples business.

Don't send her over to my place she'd probably skin me alive, the amount of mud my lot are standing in. I have ordered some wellies for them all but they haven't turned up yet
wink.gif

I bought a TB mare straight from a racing yard and she was skin and bones literally and I made no effort to hide her condition from friends etc (they all know how well we look after our animals) any way when we had the 6 weeks of hot weather at the beginning of this year I took her rugs off to get a bit of sun on her back, at this point she was looking at bit better but needed more.
Anyway we had the SSPCA at the yard accusing us of neglecting ONLY one of our horses!!!!!!!! We were devestated so I told the officer to come back the next day and I will get my vet (who knows the mares situation)
Basically my vet told her to sod off and we are not neglecting quite the opposite (trying to fix her) I have to add the officer didn't know what BREED my mare was even though I told her I had just bought her out of a RACING yard (I was going to tell her it was a shetland!!!!!!!!!) And she didn't even take into account the mare was racing fit and coming out of a harsh winter!
I hope this busy body leaves you along because it's heart breaking when you go through what we went through and I will never give a single penny to the SSPCA any more because they assumed I was guilty before they even spoke to my vet!!

Oh dear I am feeling guilty now, I should know how hardy natives are : I rugged our NF for the first time last night because the wind was blowing off the park, and it can get bitter when it blows in that way, although there's lots of shelter and a big dip under some trees where they huddle the way it blows in would have made even the dip a bit chilly, so I felt sorry for him as I'd just sat for an hour at the RS watching daughter ride and I was FREEZING despite 2 jumpers hat and scarf.....this morning there was a line of frost down his mane and over the rug so I'm sure he'd have been fine without, he's hairy enough as it is.

*sigh* People....
We once had our neighbours accuse us of starving our 2 ponies (considering the mare was eating us out of house and home - and looked pregnant nearly she was that fat!) because they were 'mooching around' all of the time. We attempted to explain that as horses, they did tend to browse and not just stand there eating one patch of grass all day - and how could they be starved when they had grass, hay, carrots & 2 hard feeds a day!?
Then we came home to find them throwing grass cuttings over the fence to the 'starving horses'...
Needless to say, the fence got higher, we never spoke to them again, and the call they threatened us with to the RSPCA never seemed to do much!
