and cancelled my old boys insurances. i was with petplan and the exclusions were ridiculous, about 15 and he has never suffered from half (and they refuse to remove them) i am going to purchase WHW Champion plus membership as it will cover the 3rd party stuff. and i will be putting the money from premiums in a savings account for any vets bills. has anyone else done this and why did you do it?

well, i was thinking about it myself,
I have insurance, and I was adding it, up, I have paid 400. a year for the past 6 years, and I havent (Touch wood)
had to claim of it.If I had saved that, I would have had 2,400!!! However, Then I thought its sods law if I stop the policy, he will take ill!!!!

I did this years ago! My tb is now 30 and her premiums were really silly. I decided to take BHS gold membership and 3rd party liability and if i got vet bill then just pay them!! Im def not out of pocket lol i think ive def spent less even with a fractured splint bone and x-rays and scans!
I do have my young cob insured but she is only 17 ish so her cover is still reasonable but when it gets out of hand ill cancel that too!

well if my boy gets ill the insurance would be useless!!! i still have my mare insured as she is a competition horse and i have her insured for LOU i have had her 18 months and haven't had to claim (though i have had to have the vet out 3 times)

A very good idea Rascasse, i have 4 claims that have not been paid on horses in the last 2 years and they always come up with a new excuse , i hear weekly about why insurance hasn't paid out ,so yes i do think its a better idea to put money aside than pay an insurance company with no idea if they will pay when you really need them. This was a very good comment from a client who i asked if they insured their horse ,"I have already paid for the horse i dont need to pay for it twice" wise words i think in these hard times.

my lad is 18 but his exclusions are wounds!!! feet and pedal bones (fair enough as he did have feet issues however this would mean lamintus wouldn't be covered) respiratory system disorders (cleared by the vet of any problems and they have told petplan) skin disorder, tendon and ligament disorder, growths (he has a lump in his throat that the vet also cleared it of causing any problem)

My aunty had paid for insurance for about 9 years with her ex-racer, She cancelled it in June/July 09 and her horse got sick which resulted in it being PTS in Nov 09.

We co-bought another Horse a few weeks ago and we've got him insured for everything,

I am with Towergate for my 16 year old. They don;t cover illness, but Do cover external injury, third party etc. The premium this year- the first time i've paid for him as a veteran- he's 16 in April. It was formerly £250 annually. I am banking the difference, and adding more so I have a "fund" in the event he is ill rather than injured. I still wanted peace of mind that should he become injured, the vet fees would be covered. If money weren;t an issue, i would just teh BHS for the third party cover.
