Yard owner may have contact details for next door? Meant to say if looks like natural causes....in case of neglect would prob contact ILPH.......sorry World Horse Welfare.
I would not panic. Mares often abort, one of mine self aborted years ago when it was nearly full term
Is there a mare about? If not, I would contact your YO to see who owns the field. If that fails, I would contact the local police (not 999) as they may know who owns the field etc. There is nothing the RSPCA/WHW/BHS can do really, the priority is that the mare is found and is treated (if self aborted) so if it is not a case of neglact then thats what I would do
I called YM, she is going to get in touch with whoever owns the field. It's full of black and white gypsy horses who just interbreed.
It wasn't a newborn, it was quite old, maybe just under a year. It must have died during the day because it wasn't there when I walked past at 1.30, then I found it at 4.30. Very sad, all the other horses and foals were at the other end of the field.
Thanks - I was worrying a little. It looked in good health, wasn't thin or anything. I was worried because it was lying net to the hedge, and on the other side of the hedge are our horses.
I've never seen a dead horse before, and I can't get the image out of my head
I thought it was just sleeping at first. Poor thing. They're half wild in that field, the stallion is very friendly though. I just hope it wasn't anything contagious.
