Saw a sheep running around on the road, blinked and it was still there.
Luckily cars all saw it on time!
I'm in my pajamas with the flu so I shoved on my wellies and goat and after much chasing managed to chase it into my yard. It then attempted to scale the stone wall to get back on the main road but I managed to chase it into my field and shut the gate.

What do I do!?
I'm surrounded by sheep so not sure which field it may belong in? And even if I knew I have no idea where the entrances to these fields are or where the owners live?

Neighbours are out or I'd ask them if they knew!

Who do I ring? :eek::confused:

It might have a pitch mark on it, a letter or a symbol stamped on its wool? Otherwise you may have to tackle it to see whether it has an ear tag or ear markings?!

Failing that, I'd pay a visit to a nearby farm and ask the farmer if he/she can come and check it, they'll be able to identify it quite quickly I'm sure.

Its got a bit of green on it?
I can't get anywhere near it and to be frank, I don't want to.. I'm scared of sheep

I'm hoping some farmer is doing a headcount and will come looking in the next few minutes, but I'm not counting on it.. Might have to have a shower and brave the flu and drive

Council should have detail on who owns what field if necessary.

Personally:
If I could get close to sheep I'd read tag and find out whose farm it belonged to (code is individual for sheep, farm and country). Or get tag number and notify local vet, farmers.

If I couldn't read tag I'd get a local farmer to do so or again call local vets and explain situation.

No idea what field its from! I live in Wales... there is a LOT of sheep :D
Can't get near to it, so going to drive about later and see if I can track down a farmer

Would make no odds wherever and however many farms it could be from... find out closest farmers to you and ask if they'd come check. You'll find a friendly one who will regardless of his or others. If not, they'll have details for others.
Council is simply a way of fast tracking getting a number to start from if you don't have any :D

just reading the title made me chuckle... no advise at all sorry other than once you find the farmer, keep the name and number for future, all our surrounding fields are owned by one farmer and his cows has a liking for our side of the river quite a lot!

Look at the other sheep, put in in whichever field had green marked sheep as well.

I can't get anywhere near sheep to take it anywhere! And like I said I have no idea where entrances to fields are

Just about to go out in the hunt of farmer now.. Why do things like this only happen to me

Speaking as one who finds sheep and cattle in the garden fairly often, this is easier said than done :D

However, it should be easy enough to return sheep to nearest field containing other sheep, and allow the farmers to sort it all out between themselves when it comes to sheep counting time (could be a while, btw, they don't do headcounts daily by any means, it would be a very time consuming operation :D).

I wouldn't base on this alone!!!

I'm with Pandora on this one, our pitchmark is red...so is two of our neighbours! Also with it being potential tupping season I'd be reluctant to chuck it in any old field, especially if it's the wrong one.

Safest bet would be locate a farmer and ask for their advice (because I wouldn't wait on a farmer coming to find you following a headcount!)

Keep it as a companion for your goat :D :D

Seriously, look for another field with green marked sheep in or see if you can get the UK number off its ear tag, this will tell you where it was bred if you call up Defra and ask.

or failing that ask your vet, they probably know who the sheep around you belong to

:D:D:D

Just gone out and checked the sheep is still here before I've gone.. sheep has dissapeared. Checked the main road and sheep is not there.
Stumbled on some neighbours who took pity on me and their searching an empty field behind mine and letting the farmer who owns the neighbouring field know.
Now back inside nursing my cold

someone else has got out the mint sauce :D

When in doubt you can always call the local police they often have numbers for local farmers and will pass a message on failing that any passing tractor wave a bit of leg they are usually pretty helpful to a maiden in distress ;)

This thread just reminded me of an incident a few weeks ago...Random bloke (probably a tourist) turns up at my gate...

Him...you've got 2 sheep loose on the road.

Me...that's odd since I don't have any sheep but I shall come and investigate anyway.

Him...oh I saw the 2 black sheep in your field and thought these 2 must be yours too.

Me...they're not black sheep, they're shetland ponies    :D

There were, in fact, 2 loose sheep on the road, they were herded into an empty field and the farmer who owned them came to retrieve them.
