Last night I found a strange knot in my mares mane which could have only been done by a human. Ive been looking on the internet about it but nothing has been said as a definite. Does any one else know what this knot could be as im mostly worried about horse theives and the theory of 'marking'? She is a coloured traditional cob and has very striking markings which also makes me think of gypsy's.

Rumour has it that sometimes a plait or knot in the mane indicates could be marked for thieves - but I hasten to add these are rumours and I don't know how true they are.

The problem with this "knot" or "plait" thing, is why on earth would a thief go through the trouble of doing this to a horse when there is the more-than-likely chance that the owner will spot it and remove the said knot/plait?

If you are going to nick something, you nick it there and then, you don't faff about plaiting a horse in the dark and then risk coming back only to find out the owner brushed out it's mane and is standing watch for you!

The whole plaiting to steal thing isn't a logical way to steal a horse.

You have done three posts and they are all on the same subject ????

The OP is new. She's explained on one of the threads that she didn't really know how to best get a response as she was very worried. I don't think she knew she could have just "bumped" it back to the top!

Take a photo of the "plait" and put it on here, then we might be able to judge wether it is a proper plait or a wind tangle.

I live near Epsom and this happened to me during the derby week. They did it to two(out of nine) of my horses, one is an ex trotter who I rescued from gypsies and the other is a 6yo ex race horse. Neighbours said they saw some white vans come down quite a few times and seeing as the yard is on a dead end was suspicious. I would be very very careful, make sure all access points to the field are secure and locked.
Good luck x

My old arab mare was quite prone to getting these knots , i was convinced that someone was doing the as they almost resembled a kind if plait , but we live in the middle of nowhere , with very little passing public - maybe the odd rambler - so i put it down to the wind or her rolling , no one ever hurt her or even new she was there - so i think they may be innocent..
