Well, Mr. Jetley pup came home with us a year ago. I remember how excited I was when mum finally agreed to get a dog. We had lost our cat, Kea a few months earlier and the house was so strange without a pet in it, he was 21 when he was pts and had been with us all of his life as we owned his mother.
We began researching different breeds, and what we would like, spoke extensively with the dog trainer at our yard who was so so helpful. We eventually decided that we wanted to rescue a dog. After looking on different rescue websites, we found Chiltern Dog Rescue. We went to visit them, and told them exactly what we were looking for in a dog, they tried to fit us with a dog they thought would be most suitable, and warned us if they didn't think any of the dogs they had in were suitable, we may have to wait until they had one. Luckily they decided that they had one dog which was suitable. We sat in the waiting area for about 5 minutes, and they brought in a skinny, nervous, gangly looking dog. I remember stroking him and feeling sick as his spine, hips and ribs were all so prominent, but I fell in love with him, as did the rest of my family, he had these big sad eyes and I just melted! We took him home a few days after that, after we had, had a home check from Chiltern Dog Rescue.
One year, an extra 15kg, and a £7000 operation, later here we are! I couldn't wish for a more fun dog to have. I do adore him and I am so glad we rescued him, you just wouldn't recognise him as the dog we got last year. He has turned our lives upside down but he is fantastic. I would urge anyone wanting a dog to go to a rescue center, he is our first dog and he is just perfect. Much credit to Chiltern Dog Rescue, who were so proffesional and am so glad they fitted us with him.

Here are some photos of the last year,

In June I took him to a little show in a village near us, and he came 3rd in best rescue and 6th in best condition, they were both big classes with 15-20 in them!

In October Jet became very very ill and we almost lost him. He inhailed some grass seeds, which went through his lung wall and got stuck between his ribs and plural layer(I think) the seeds then went septic and leaked all of the nasty puss into his lungs which began to fill up, he had to have a massive operation and to stay in a specialist vets for two weeks. He lost a lot of weight, and went down to 17kg (he was 15kg when we got him) he wasn't allowed off the lead for two months, not even in the garden as his ribs were held together with wire.

I didn't originally mean to post that many, I got a bit carried away! I kept finding photos I forgot I had! If you want me to move it to the gallery let me know...

He looks like a different dog Dani.
He's lost that helpless look in his eyes and he just looks so full of life.

You'e done wonders for him.

He's lovely, a real credit to you.

About the grass seed thing, my mother's friend's dog had the exact same thing happen a few months ago. The dog (a Bullmastiff) almost lost his life, but recovered enough to compete at Cruft's recently

Oh wow really! That's interesting! It is so awful to see it happening to them, we were so worried about him when we got the phone call saying 'if we don't operate NOW he will be dead by lunch time'

Now you wouldn't imagine he had, had anything wrong with him!

I love seeing piccies of the handsome Jet

...and what a life you have given him...makes our job rescuing them so worth it..when they get homes like Jet...I bet the rescue center you got him from are over the moon with the life he is living with you and your family...well done

Gosh, how traumatic.

George the mastiff was with his owner at the park, along with his sister mastiff, when he suddenly collapsed and couldn't move. He had to be carried to the car and rushed straight to the vet's; for several days afterwards, he couldn't wag his tail and the grass seeds--so the vet thought--had permanently damaged his spine. Luckily it wasn't the case.

Here he is, all recovered and in action at Crufts

My bitch Ellie suffered the same. A seed became lodged in her spine. After six months of my poor girl in pain and loosing so much weight that she was skin and bone and lots of blood tests, she was sent to a specialist vet place in Cambridge. They discovered it straight away. A strong course of antibiotics cleared it up in one week..... She is such a special girl and so brave. I am so wary now when she goes near grasses.

What a very handsome boy! And what a fantastic story in pictures. Quite choked me up to see how he has transformed. He really is a credit to you and your family.

He's Gorgeous! A real credit to you and your family.

My old dog had a grass seed lodged up between his back teeth that worked its way to the optic nerve! His eye balloned up. Vet operated on him, lost couple of teeth trying to get the grass seed out, he was lucky his eye recovered.
