50 bags of wood pellets as i really dont like the eco-bed i've been using, but having never used them before it would be great if someone could give me a simpletons guide to setting up a bed with them pls.
for a 12x12 stable... depending on size of bag, put down 5 - 10 bags of pellets, arrange them into a bed shape.
get hose pipe, with setting on fine mist... and WATER the bed.
leave it for half an hour
check it - you will have invariably have not put enough water on, but will be able to see some of the pellets have swollen. whizz them all around with a spade to mix them up and apply more water if needed.
repeat until the bed looks like about half of it is sawdust and the other half is pellets. the pellets will then soak up any wetness.
every morning, take out all the poo and swiggle the rest of the bedding around to mix it all up and get any un-swollen pellets moved around to the damper parts. i take out any actual wet bed but some people leave it in. some even take out the wet stuff, leave it to dry and put it back in. anyway, i take WET stuff out, if it is visible. but, raffy being like he is, he mixes it all round anyway.
i add new dry pellets when the bed soesn't have many left in it. it works out that in raff's stable i add a new bag about every 5 days. in iggle's stable he is UNBELIEVABLY neat and wees on the mats (not bed) and poos in the corner. so i have only had to put two new bags in his in more than 2 months.
i love the pellets. totally fab. it will take you a while to get into your routine with them. but once you work out how many days 'cycle' you get with them, you'll find them fab.
i've never used shavings. i'd GUESS that it goes 4 times as far as they swell to four times their size.
i've also never used 10kg bags. mine are either 13.5, 15 or 20kg.
i imagine they work better than shavings because, in pellet form, they have lots more absorbency. you'll notice this when you water them. it feels odd watering the bed, but it's like adding water to something freezedried. it doesnt feel wet afterwards.
