Whats your opinions please on Iveco chassis as horseboxes. Not the actual horsebox just the chassis. What are the main faults, disadvantages, advantages etc. Ive commited myself to one and now Im being told they arent great. Its an Iveco Cargo 70 something or other on a 51 plate.
Thanks for any replies

We had an old one and it was fairly reliable.

Had a 57 plate last year brand new and it is fab, never let us down, although we had to have a speed limiter put on it last week and it went in for mot, but before that we could do 80 on the motorway easy, and it flies up the hills even with the 3 on the back

Phew, feel a bit better now and Thanks for replying, Ive been told they are great on motorways, very powerful but in the same breath was told they arent a patch on the daf or man, go through brakes quickly and the brakes seize if they are left to stand.
Really glad youve had a good experience.

oooh interesting that you have heard that. Ive been predominantly looking at ivecos and have been told that they are equal to the DAFs (although no-one can beat a MAN but sadly i cant afford a nice one). To behonest everyone has different experiences with different chassis and i doubt anyone is ABSOLUTLY perfect!

New lorry sounds nice!

Price is a major factor with me, I just wanted something safe and reliable, nothing fancy and have probably commited the worst sin of viewing the chassis sought by the horsebox builder on our own with no mechanical knowledge.

Hi - good to hear you've possibly found another box. Mine's an Iveco 7515 Cargo so probably the same. I've had it a few months now and have found it easy enough to drive and no different with 1 or 2 horses on board. Is fine on the motorways - would probably go a lot faster than I drive it. Always reliable to start - but mine gets a lot of use - I'd say out at least 1-2x a week so I probably never leave it standing long enough to go flat. The only thing I struggled with to start with was the gear shifts which I'm told are easier on the Daf. Saying that it doesn't take long to get the hang of it. So far its been a pleasure to own/drive. It will be due plating in November and so I will need to get the mechanic to look it over in October time and I suppose then I will find out what wear and tear there is on it since I bought it and that might be a bit more telling as to how it performs in some ways.

we had a daf then changed it to an iveco and OH much preferred to drive the iveco. it always felt like it was faster than the daf.

It sounds like you are looking at a 75e17 iveco tector, the 17 means it is 170 BHP so will have plenty of oomph to pull the load. They are a pretty good chassis and fairly cheap for parts - (we build on the brand new version - the Eurocargo- which has the same fingerprint for the cab as the DAF) . Just watch a couple of areas - like the door locks and casings and around the door as they tend to wear and rust quite quickly. The tector is easy to drive but if you are quite short ( like me) once the seat is moved forward you may find it difficult to use/ reach the gearstick as it located quite far back, and can wrench the left shoulder a bit.

my husband works for a iveco dealer and he says the brakes cease up, gear shift cease up. they where out spring bushes quickly, it is is a tector they have trouble with fuel injectors and they are expensive to fix. he says that the daf is much better wagon. He will not let me have a wagon so I have a three horse wessex trailer and its great.

I have been looking at chassis as we want to do a body swap and my mechanics told me not to buy Iveco as did the lorry parts place- they both said Mann or Daf only

Thanks for all your replies, it seems like mixed opinions and the bad ones echo what Ive been told. I had a budget to stick to and was suprised when I was told the builder was looking at between 2000 and 2002 for a chassis as I never thought I'd be able to get one so new. I have drove a Man, daf and now the Iveco and the Man was the easiest but I believe also the dearest so I suppose you get what you pay for quality wise. Its good to hear that the gear changes take some getting used to on the Iveco as I thought the same and was worried there was something wrong with the gear box. Ive since been told from a deisel mechanic that this is normal on the Iveco so feel a bit better now. Fingers crossed its ok as I cant wait. Ive been told I should have it in about 3 weeks so Ive just got to decide on a colour now.

My lorry is on an L reg Iveco 75e15 chassis. I've had it 18 months now.

It's never let me down, and flew through both it's platings with only minor things like bulbs/windscreen wipers and this time read brake pads needing changing. Cost me about £400 each time with a service too.

Get used once or twice a fortnight.
